2020.10.19 17:57 uncannymemeThis may be controversial but I’m pretty sure the Fire Nation isn’t based on Japan.
Over all I’m not a huge fan of the fanon fire nation = Japan, earth = China, air = Tibet, water = Inuit (which isn’t a single culture or tribe btw) because its incredible reductive. I mean even the air nomads, who probably take the most from a single culture, I can see inspiration from Tibet and Mongolia (hence the contradictory ‘they live in temples’ and ‘they are nomads’. ) But the Japan one really bugs me because unlike the others there isn't really any basis in the show for this belief. Fire nation clothes and architecture is largely Chinese in inspiration with some Thai clothing and Ancient Egyptian architecture. And I mean the Buddhist Genocide in Tibet was committed by China. And this is kinda true for the whole show there really isnt much Japanese influence in the world. All I could find was on Kyoshi Island and that one spa for the first ep of season two (both of which are apart of the Earth Kingdom). I mean the only things that are distinctly Japanese are that they fire nation is an island nation that did an imperialism but that could describe Great Britain too which the Fire Nation obviously isnt. Personally, it’s always kind of felt like a way to push off imperialism as a Japan thing rather than reflecting on how nationalism, colonialism, and imperialism are truly evil and horrible acts that have lasting effects on people and communities. ATLA always felt more like a critique on US neo-colonialism than on WW2 Japan which would make more sense anyway because it’s a show written and create by and for Americans.
Newer movie. The lead was in a serious accident and in a coma. She lived a life as a married woman with two children while in the coma. She regains her senses (in Hallmark mode with full makeup and no physical effects) to discover she is really single. Her job fired her for being in a coma for 2 months, instead of suing she goes with a temp secretary place and gets placed at the photo studio owned by the husband from the coma life. He has an accomplished girlfriend who is tenure track faculty at the university, but the lead sort of worms her way into his personal life using her inside info. The lead is super cute and very expressive, the lead's BFF is super cute and nice, the love interest is cute and nice. Even the other woman is cute and seems pretty nice (the movie has her call the love interest 'Tommy' as the conflict, and she likes her Thai food hotter than he does, otherwise she is pretty great). The lead's parents were supposed to be annoying trying to get her to get back into life and ignore the coma life, but honestly they and the BFF should have been way more strongly into pushing her into therapy for the coma life (and the doctor should have been way more insistent)
2020.10.17 18:37 NeedHealthHas anyone tried training explosive power versus slow resistance strength?
I've been training BJJ for a year, but I've been doing explosive strength training for about 4 years. I basically do barbell clean and presses, jerks, and snatches. I also mix in some kettlebells, basically the same movements, but single arms. I feel like I'm generally pretty explosive and well-rounded at these. But... I feel like there's been very little crossover to grappling for me. I know 99.9% of this boils down to technique. But I'm comparing myself not just to peers at my belt level, but others I see... like Gordon Ryan. It's hard to explain but I feel athletically conditioned for more explosive style activities like sprinting or even Muay Thai, which I've trained on-and-off for a few years as well. Movements where I have to be fast, powerful, but I'm not working against heavy constant resistance. There are a lot of guys I roll with who don't seem "athletic" but are just very strong, and who tell me they basically just do very traditional resistance training: bench press, bicep curls, skullcrushers, cable machines, fly machines, etc. Pretty slow too, almost like bodybuilding routines. I feel like there's more crossover there based on what I'm seeing. I feel like my training isn't really helping me when there's a 215 pound dude pressing down on me and pulling an arm with force over technique, etc. If you follow guys like Gordon Ryan... they're basically doing the same thing. Standing in the gym on cable machines doing curls and stuff you'd see in bodybuilding magazines. I feel like it's en vogue to shit on that stuff now, but it just seems like it's somehow more suitable to this sport. Am I wrong, or am I just dealing with lots of guys who are strong IN SPITE of this?
2020.10.16 15:48 CyberpunkGrapplingKazushi Sakuraba Appreciation Thread : His essential matches with links
Hi everyone ! This is my first post on reddit ! The main reason I wanted to join this forum was to spread puroresu love, at first I was thinking about doing appretiation threads about the likes of Shinya Hashimoto and Akira Maeda as I felt that these two doesn't get enough credit for their incredible careers. But after realising that there are so much stuff that I haven't seen yet I just said « screw it I'm just going to do one for my Hero, as I've followed his wrestling career closely » I'm going to send you links to his best matches, if I didn't labelled a match with the word [recommended] you can skip it. Anyways why exactly did I choose Kazushi Sakuraba of all people ? Not very simple to explain, YES HE IS my favourite mma fighter of all times, a once a lifetime talent who was willing to fight anyone having victories over bigger opponents, sometimes beating them at their own games but... I'm not here to talk about his mma career. Saku also happens to be great in the squarred circle, he was great in his early years and now is one of the most unique technician around. I know technical wrestling is not very popular in the U.S. but to me it will always be the right path. Wrestling is supposed to be about actual wrestling, not high spots, I'm sorry but it's the truth. In case you want to tell me how mat-work is boring, go watch some tapes of Skayde, Johnny Saint or 1957s French Wrestling With so many injuries that have been caused by dives recently, I'm hoping the matches that I'm about to show you will give you a breath of fresh air. Anyways... what's is really interresting about his career is the fact that he has two Pro wrestling runs with a MMA career in the middle just like Shibata but the difference between both guys PW's career is that Shibata in 2003 and Shibata in 2017 was the same, whereas Sakuraba's approach to pro wrestling has changed a lot in his 2nd run. Saku's ability to adapt to the evolving landscape of the business is the reason why he's able to work everywhere despite not having learn the traditional pro wrestling training. Disclaimer : If you're not familiar with the « Gracie Hunter », skip right up until 2013 and start with his New Japan matches, that's how I was introduced to the character myself, and that's how I got into technical wrestling and martial arts. The birth of a Lion : It all started in the early 90s, when Saku joined the dojo of Union of Wrestling Force International (a Shoot-Style-Wrestling promotion) after a successful career as an amateur wrestler. In October of 2018, while writing an article for Kiyoshi Tamura, Johnathan Snowden of POST-WRESTLING wrote something really interesting about this specific style of wrestling : « In some ways, shootstyle wrestling is the hardest to pull off. The bouts, even between the biggest stars, are like extended Young Lions matches, limited only to moves and strategies that fit loosely within the realm of the possible. The wrestlers are like artists robbed of most of the colors on the spectrum, limited to mere primary colors as they attempt to paint a masterpiece. » Training under Billy Robinson was a big factor in his training, he rapidly became one of the best CATCH Practitioner of the company, (and later in MMA). He was very snug technician but also very smooth. You could almost think that he was a RINGS fighter, because he spent way more time on the mat than on his feet. On top of that I really think he was a superb seller. Let's jump right into his Pre-MMA career with Saku's best matches in the UWFI and New Japan : (Note : a lot of footages of this specific run have been deleted from youtube very recently) -Kazushi Sakuraba & Masahito Kakihara vs Gene Lydick & Steve Nelson UWFI 10.04.1994 *RECOMMENDED* Links with english commentary : part 1 https://youtu.be/Xz_vJOzo7WU part 2 https://youtu.be/RvYibWQc9Jc part 3 https://youtu.be/dVhfGpR1TNg -Kazushi Sakuraba & Masahito Kakihara vs Gene Lydick & Billy Scott UWFI 18.08.1994 *RECOMMENDED* Link with Russian commentary: https://youtu.be/2f6-83XH09U Those two matches are your typical UWFI tag team matches, it has some brutal suplexes some stiff strikes exchanges and the technical stuff is ur Catch As Catch Can Wrestling. It is in the same veins as a Josh Barnett's Bloodsport match. The next match on the other hand might not be for everyone as it is a pure CATCH wrestling match with only few strikes, notice how this is a mashup between two teams of a teacher and his student : -Kazushi Sakuraba & Kiyoshi Tamura vs Kazuo Yamazaki & a young and skinny Yoshihiro Takayama UWFI 20.04.1995 https://youtu.be/KI0mnclArGU -Sakuraba vs James Stone (A.K.A Nunzio/Little Guido) UWFI 18.06.1995 https://youtu.be/cvIFuX3p7P8 RECOMMENDED This is probably the EASIEST Shoot-style match to show to someone with no knowledge of that specific style, as it's a short match that involves a future ECW and WWE guy. Oh and also because the crowd is so freaking hot for this The New Japan/UWFI feud : Not a lot of great matches but still cool to know that he wrestled there almost 25 years ago. -Kazushi Sakuraba & Hiromitsu Kanehara vs Yuji Nagata & Tokimitsu Ishizawa NJPW 9.10.1995 (also available on dailymotion) Njpw world link :https://front.njpwworld.com/p/s_series_00139_1_1 That's actually the first time I have been impressed with Hiromitsu Kanehara, doing some beautiful kicks in the beginning. In case you're wondering why he's barefeet, wearing a pair of shorts, it's because he's an actual Muay Thai practitioner, years earlier he was sent in an excursion in Thailand. One cool trivia : Saku and Ishizawa (the future Kendo Kashin) would become very good friends IRL. -Kazushi Sakuraba & Hiromitsu Kanehara vs Tadao Yasuda & Tokimitsu Ishizawa UWFI 09.10.1995 Short match, not available anymore -Kazushi Sakuraba, Hiromitsu Kanehara & Kenichi Yamamoto vs Yuji Nagata, Tokimitsu Ishizawa & Shinjiro Ohtani NJPW 04.01.1996 (also available on dailymotion) Njpw world link: https://front.njpwworld.com/p/s_series_00141_1_1 -Kazushi Sakuraba, Hiromitsu Kanehara, Kenichi Yamamoto & Masahito Kakihara vs Yuji Nagata, Tokimitsu Ishizawa, Shinjiro Ohtani & Tatsuhito Takaiwa 2/3 Falls Match NJPW 03.02.1996 (also available on dailymotion) One of the stiffest New Japan match I've ever seen. Takaiwa got a taste of his own medicine. Njpw world link : https://front.njpwworld.com/p/s_archive_32_01_07 -Kazushi Sakuraba, Hiromitsu Kanehara, Kenichi Yamamoto & Masahito Kakihara vs Yuji Nagata, Takashi Iizuka, Black Cat & Koji Kanemoto 2/3 Falls Match NJPW 04.02.1996 Njpw world link: https://front.njpwworld.com/p/s_archive_32_02_06 -Kazushi Sakuraba vs Kiyoshi Tamura the original trilogy] RECOMMENDED HISTORY : After Tamura (who was the 2nd top guy) wasn't given a match against Nobuhiko Takada (the Ace of the company) he refused to take part of the New Japan feud. He felt that Takada should have passed the torch to him, and that he didn't belonged in New Japan's style of fighting as it was not realistic. As a punishment Tamura wasn't booked for 7 months and when he came back he was only put in midcard matches with his junior who happens to be Saku. There were tensions between those two, Tamura was known to be a bit selfish, often protecting his spot (can't blame him tbh) but the matches clicked as some fans have called it some of the best technical matches in UWFI history. The matches : https://youtu.be/nDAZsCqKQU4 March1st 1996 UWFI https://youtu.be/ak2tWoM25vg March 23th 1996 UWFI https://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1307305 May 27th 1996 UWFI Sadly their last match would be Tamura's last in the company, due to unhappiness he joined Akira Maeda's RINGS promotion one month later, quickly becoming a bigger star, having the best Shoot-style matches in history Don't worry this isn't the last time you'll heard of Kiyoshi « the Aloof Genius » Tamura. Meanwhile in New Japan, Our hero Shinya Hashimoto had defeated the evil outsider Nobuhiko Takada to regain the IWGP title, (back in April). The New Japan/UWFI feud slowly came to an end, with the G1 Climax approaching and nothing left to do for the juniors, Jushin Thunder Liger suggested a new concept, he came up with the Super J Crown, a tournament where juniors from all over the world would defend their titles, until the eventual leader would be declared the best junior in the world But before this huge thing, they booked the Skydiving J show it was pretty much a small njpw event where only junior championship matches were on the card. It may have been just a foretaste to the J Crown but it was pretty cool. There were some weird matchups like Ultimo Dragon defending the WAR Jr title against Gran Naniwa or Super Delfin defending the CMLL Welterweight title against a very young Taka Michinoku Sakuraba was invited and had a match with Otani for the vacant UWA Jr title. I t was great. - Kazushi Sakuraba vs Shinjiro Otani UWA World Light Heavyweight Match 17.06.1996 Skydiving J Show RECOMMENDED (also available on dailymotion) Njpw world link : https://front.njpwworld.com/p/s_series_00144_1_1WARNING : All of the next Saku matches had been DELETED up until the year 97 Those next three matches are some of my favourite Saku performences : -Kazushi Sakuraba vs Masahito Kakihara 08.17.1996 RECOMMENDED One of my fav UWFI match EVER. Hopefully it comes back at some point. -Kazushi Sakuraba vs Masao Orihara 11.09.1996 RECOMMENDED Somehow these two guys did have a hell of a match despite having nothing in common. -Kazushi Sakuraba vs Yoshihiro Takayama 20.11.1996 RECOMMENDED I'd say that this is probably his last memorable match on the list before UWFI would end. After the company closed it's door, it got rebranded as KINGDOM, it was not as successful as the previous company, it was basically an organisation with fake MMA fights. I didn't like it. If You want to see the best KINGDOM match it's this one : -Kazushi Sakuraba vs Hiromitsu Kanehara (sometime in 1997) https://youtu.be/ocwBL-CwHWU It's ridiculously stupid for guys to throw real bombs at eachother in wrestling but it's way more fun than watching a Ishii/Suzuki snoozefest (New Japan fanboys coming at me in 3...2...) PRIDE retrospective : His MMA career: In 1997 a mma promotion called PRIDE was created, due to the rising popularity of Rings, Shooto and Pancrase in Japan. The first big star they approached was Takada, who would end up having a terrible/awful career (but at least he really helped the sport) Sakuraba would join him due to loyalty, stealing the show every night he was in, having a big rivalry with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioners and in particular the Gracie family. He became a big star to the point that he ended up carrying the company on his back in 2000/2001 (short period but still very impressive). Also he had a weird obsession with fighting Wanderlei Silva of all people. Which was a passing of the torch in some ways as Wanderlei took Sakuraba's spot as the top 3rd or 4th fighter of the company after their trilogy. If you have to watch 2 fight of his, I'd first recommend the one he had with Carlos Newton (June 24th 1998) because it's without a doubt the greatest grappling match in MMA history https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jAzXs5mOyFE And his fight with Rampage Jackson (July 29th 2001) because it almost felt like a PW match https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wFfg369jec8 While in Pride, Saku had been challenging Tamura in a MMA fight for years. When he was still a young boy Saku felt mistreated by Tamura and still felt like he had to prove something many years later. Tamura finally accepted in 2007 but Saku was way past his prime at that point and broken down due to the years of abuse he took. The fight happened in K1 Dynamite in 2008 here it is : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ED142luu5Kw It was sad to watch, I lost a bit of respect for Tamura after this. If you're interrested about his years in Mixed Martial Arts. Here are a couple of good articles : http://fightland.vice.com/blog/an-ode-to-kazushi-sakuraba (from 2015) https://www.f4wonline.com/ufc-news/kazushi-sakuraba-be-inducted-ufc-hall-fame-236711 (From 2017 by uncle Dave) -Kazushi Sakuraba vs Kendo Kashin Inoki Bom-Ba-Ye 2000 https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6kwu8c In the middle of his mma career, he was invited by Inoki to have a match with Kendo Kashin. This match was a lot of fun, it was a way for him to display all of his signature mma moves in a worked environement. I can't write this without having a big grin in my face but YES, during some of his fights we actually saw him doing MONGOLIAN CHOPS and dragging opponents by their ankles XD Return to professional wrestling : -Kazushi Sakuraba & Katsuyori Shibata (Laughter7) vs Shinishi Suzukawa & Atsushi Sawada DREAM/IGF Fight for Japan 2011 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YLs3BWjXZF0 I've seen some people calling it a disaster because it was just a battle of ego where nobody involved knew how to work, everybody were stiff and nobody wanted to sell a damn thing. Personnaly I think its just a case of it's so bad it's good. I liked a lot. Notes : -Shibata broke his wrist while doing his low dropkick ; derailing his New Japan return. New Japan Run : His return/debut alongside Shibata was totally unexpected as the company was looking to get completely rid of MMA-like matches. Indeed, Takaaki Kidani (new japan chairman at the time) signed Shibata and Saku without telling anyone. This caused a bit of chaos as many wrestlers and fans as well felt that they weren't needed, especially Shibata but that's another story. To be honest I haven't paid attention to his tag team matches (please tell me if I missed some good stuff) but most of those next three single matches were good -Kazushi Sakuraba vs Shinsuke Nakamura 04.01.2013 RECOMMENDED (also availble in the bilibili website) njpw link: https://front.njpwworld.com/p/s_series_00203_1_10 When earlier I said that Saku could adapt to the new direction of the business, you could see that in his 2nd PW run, he was less aggressive, using his environment to his advantage, it may have took him a little while to fully adapt but he always got reactions from fans (he is a natural entertainer). Very good match, it helped that Shinsuke was his opponent. -Kazushi Sakuraba vs Minoru Suzuki 04.01.2015 UWFI Rules Njpw link:https://front.njpwworld.com/p/s_series_00248_1_7 -Kazushi Sakuraba vs Katsuyori Shibata 05.07.2015 RECOMMENDED (also available in the Bilibili website) Njpw link: https://front.njpwworld.com/p/s_series_00330_1_03 This match was crazy, I remember seeing some fans calling it their favourite Shibata match not too long ago. In 2016 New Japan would let him go. This run gave us some good matches but he was not used to his full potencial. Having only 6 single matches in 3 years and only participating in one tag tournament (world tag league 2014) with Toru Yano. After this disapointing PW return He would compete in several Grappling matches including this one : -Kazushi Sakuraba & Hideo Tokoro vs Kiyoshi Tamura & Wanderlei Silva RIZIN 1 (2016) RECOMMENDED https://www.bilibili.com/video/av65143158/ This was so much fun, at one point there was an incredible sequence where Tamura and Tokoro were trying to break eachother's knees. If Karl Gotch,Lou Thesz and Billy were still around, they would have loved it for sure. His run in NOAH : This may be unpopular but I'd say that this is his best pro wrestling run, he is no longer labelled as « the mma guy », here, he is always having good matches, always showing something different, bringing in new viewers... and HE FINALLY WON A BELT !!! -Kazushi Sakuraba, Nosawa Rongai & Hajime Ohara vs Yoshinari Ogawa, Kotaro Suzuki & Chris Ridgeway NOAH 16.09.2019https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74Xs-1rvGSI This is his first match in NOAH, Saku naturally had good chemistry with Ridgeway who has a background in martial arts but somehow he also has some good sequences with Yoshinari Ogawa who is a traditional wrestler. -Kazushi Sakuraba, Nosawa Rongai & Hajime Ohara vs Osamu Nishimura, Hi69 & Junta Miyawaki NOAH 02.11.2019https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXTGDbH4t5o&list=UUWbl4loi-eC1CuK-jXAD3hg&index=4Nishimura is one of my favourite techician of the early 2000s. He is a throwback wrestler, paying tribute to his trainers Dory Funk Jr and Tatsumi Fujinami. I'd have never believed in a million years that he would share the ring with Sakuraba. -Kazushi Sakuraba & Takashi Sugiura vs Hideki Suzuki & Kazuyuki Fujita NOAH 27.12.2019 RECOMMENDED At 2:18.30 https://youtu.be/Jx80C9D4z6o?t=8310Hideki is one Billy Robinson's last disciple so it was another dream match taking place in NOAH. Overall Really good main event between the 4 top wrestlers of the Sugiura-Gun faction. Here Saku shows that he can have a good match with big fellas. The whole ebent is free on NOAH's official channel, plus a bonus match at the end. One thing that I noticed in mid 2020 is that 75% of Keiji Mutoh's matches were tags against Saku, (Mutoh has the worst knees in the business) which proves how safe of a worker he is, you never get injured in a match against him. -Kazushi Sakuraba, Takashi Sugiura, Nosawa Rongai & Kendo Kashin vs Keiji Mutoh, Naomichi Marufuji, Masaaki Mochizuki & Yuko Miyamoto Just a random match passing by, deathmatch veteran Yuko Miyamoto makes a rare Noah appearance NOAH Stay Together Showdown - Sugiura-Gun vs Kongoh 05.03.2020 : Available in DDT Universe (can't send the link) and Bilibili Big event where all members of the Sugiura-Gun faces members of Kongoh in singles and tags. Sugiura-Gun vs Kongoh 05.08.2020 https://youtu.be/koDTO8WJFBg Hideki makes his Noah return after 4 months. Saku, Sugiura & Kaz Hayashi vs AZIX (Go Shiozaki & Katsuhiko Nakajima) & Daisuke Harada 20.08.2020 : https://youtu.be/lBWOjG5wbzI Sakuraba & Sugiura vs Shiozaki & Nakajima GHC Tag Team Match (vacant) *RECOMMENDED* 30.08.2020 : https://youtu.be/lbTR-47dysc NOAH N-1 Victory 2020 It's a robin style tournament that happened thorough september, all of Saku's matches were pretty good. Saku vs Masaaki Mochizuki : https://youtu.be/C29-ecxoK-o Saku vs Go Shiozaki : https://youtu.be/s1p_faTC5SU Saku vs Kaito Kiyomiya : https://youtu.be/L0XfxEn5GAw Saku vs Manabu Soya : https://youtu.be/b3yrQ6joVY4 Very unique matchup, one of my favourite match of the year Saku, Sugiura, Fujita & Kashin vs Kenou, Manabu Soya, Masa Kitamiya & Yoshiki Inamura 11.10.2020 : https://youtu.be/4VnWSSl7yrg Another tag between Kongoh and Sugiura-Gun, Fujita makes his big return after 5 months, and he's still a reckless gorilla. I hope this [email protected] post made you appreciate his longevity, and his ability to move from Shoot-style to mma and then to traditional P. Saku really is an anomaly, and that 's why the guy is loved worldwide. (And also because he happens to be a sweetheart outside of the ring) So what's next ? Who should be next ? A *Mariko Yoshida* should be fun, and an *Akira Maeda* one would be very interesting for non-old school readers But for now I just want to see your opinions, even controversial ones. I'm hoping I can have some discussions with some of you. Oh and If you were able to make it to the end, congrats. BTW If I wrote some incoherent sentences I apologize, English not being my main language I can write little sentences but have a little bit of trouble writing long paragraph.
2020.10.16 12:29 fpuenI support the government. Not every country needs to follow the West
I am not Thai but stand with the silent majority who are fine for Thailand to follow its own path. Western values appeal to people across the world and no one denies the benefits that civil liberties bring. They tend overlook the downsides.
Racial, economic, political strife across the US, a side effect of high individualism
Low compliance to mask wearing acress Europe until there was a forceful clamp down. japan largely controlled its outbreak due to respect for government and associated traditional Asian values
Wealth but record high levels of loneliness, depression, abandonment of elders, broken/single parent families, etc...
A dystopian social media replacement that acts as a highlight reel of life to the discontent of all outside the top 1 or 2% of society
In my view extra rights do not correlate well to increased happiness. Collectivism on the other hand, seems to do just that. And governments that maintain a collectivist culture are therefore beneficial to society at large. At least in this part of the world. Are they perfect, of course not. No one likes corruption. But anti-corruption efforts fall well short of what the protestors demand. If you argue for democratic reform on economic grounds, I think you are still wrong. Biases upfront, I do well for myself, especially for Thailand. That aside, if you look at the smiling farmers out in the countryside, while they might secretly want a new toyota pickup, here traditional values that bind family and community are also self evident and uplifting. Wealth means less than people think even though advertising would have people believe otherwise. Leave Thailand alone, protestors. The country is just fine. You are the minority, your people don't want to become another Germany. Any "progress" you make will just tear at the soul of the country until it loses its identity.
2020.10.16 06:02 SinnicleSquabbleWhere can I buy menma online (ship to Illinois, USA)?
The real-deal, lacto-fermented goods. Canned bamboo never turns out right, and I made the foul mistake of getting the sour bamboo shoots from the Thai/Viet market ... yeesh. I have never, in my life, had such a difficult time finding an ingredient before. And with the ramen boom over the past decade, you'd think this would be easier. I live in Chicago and not a single store carries it.
2020.10.15 08:39 Slayer_TipUFC Fight Night Ortega v Korean Zombie Fight Predictions
Hello there. I hope you're all doing well! This year is pretty close to being over, can you believe it? This has been a wild year for us MMA fans, and just to think there's more events to come... Wew. I'm still yet to figure out when i'll be skipping an event to take a break, ill need to wait for a lesser known card to come around, so for now there's no official announcement of me taking a break. Maybe during summer because when I get hot i just can't be fucked. With all that aside, lets get to the juicy part of this post. Prelims Lightweight Fares Ziam (10-3-0, NS) v Jamie Mullarkey (12-3-0, NS) - Despite Ziam being a similar size to Mullarkey, he is a very decent kickboxer who excels at range. Whilst he did have a boring fight during his debut, some part due to the fact that Madge wanted to wrestle and stop Ziam from putting out any offense. Since there was not a whole lot of action during that fight, the fact that Madge pushed for a grapple heavy gameplan coming in, kinda tells me that Ziam is a serious person on the feet. However, do not expect a banger. Mullarkey in his last fight, took down Riddell 3 times, which effectively shut down some striking advantage that Riddell had. I have a feeling he’s going to try to come into this fight with the mindset of getting close and initiating a clinch, and just make it dirty and grind out the win. It’s not going to be a remarkable performance I don’t think. There is always a chance for both fighters to go in swinging and look for a knockout since both have lost their debut, and are looking for a second chance at redemption, but is it worth the risk? Mullarkey is always down to throw hands, he has a slick one two but in this fight I feel like Mullarkey will focus on fence work, and try to just control the fight, not necessarily give off a lot of damage. Mullarkey via UD Bantamweight Said Nurmagomedov (13-2-0, NS) v Mark Striegl (D) (18-2-0, 4 FWS) - Nurmagomedov hasn’t fought this year so i wonder how his camp has adapted to the COVID changes, and especially the rough timetable change at fight island, because as we know and heard, fighters are up at odd hours to adjust to the odd time the fight starts. Nurmagomedov is a very fast and explosive striker who uses effective in an out movement in order to set up a spinning back kick, which he executes at exceptional speeds if i may say so, it’s insanely fast but absolutely expected for someone in the Bantamweight division. Nurmagomedov had one setback so far and that was against Barcelos who in his own right is on a strong streak. The reason behind that loss was purely the ground game that Barcelos had, it was a huge skill gap and no doubt opened Nurmagomedovs eye to the capabilities of excellent ground based fighters. This is where Striegl comes in. Striegl is a submission monster. 14 submission wins, most of them in the first round, this guy is exceptional on the ground and will be looking to take this fight there very quickly, and Nurmagomedov is going to be ready. This is a crazy match up, because I don’t see Striegl out striking Nurmagomedov at all, so Striegl will either need to force a takedown and work very quick to get a submission, or ride it out and don’t chase a win. Last time around, when Striegl was meant to face Valiev, I predicted that Striegl will win due to his ground game skillset, and again, i will make that same prediction. This is pretty controversial for a few reasons, but mostly because Nurmagomedov already fought a few times in the UFC, he is used to the stress of the big stage, Striegl has only fought in One Championship, and whilst that’s a huge platform, it’s no UFC. Don’t bet based off this prediction unless you really, really want a risky win. Striegl via Sub R1 Light Heavyweight Gadzhimurad Antigulov (20-7-0, 3 FLS) v Maxim Grishin (30-8-2, NS) - This is a tough one. Antigulov is on a fairly bad losing streak, and the fact that he hasn’t been incredibly active in between losses makes me wonder if he’s still hungry, lets briefly go over Antigulovs history of cancellations. After his fight against Christensen, he was inactive for one year with two cancellations. He then lost to Cutelaba and had one cancellation due to injury, after his loss against Michal Oleksiejczuk, he had a triple whopper of cancellations, twice due to him withdrawing, and once due to the pandemic. Finally he landed a fight and lost swiftly against Paul Craig. So to say that he has had a rough UFC career is to put it incredibly lightly. He needs a win and no doubt money pretty badly, so I fully expect Antigulov to come in looking for a quick finish to grab a 50k bonus cheque. With that said, Grishin isn’t looking any better from a records standpoint, he lost to Tybura but he was also a late replacement and Tybura could not put him away, but he did manage to somewhat easily takedown Grishin a few times, which from a live viewing standpoint told me that Grishins lack of camp made that happen somewhat, but still, he agreed to a mixed martial arts fight and he definitely got one. The interesting part is that Grishin is coming in as a Light Heavyweight, with a full camp and training, and he’s going to look pretty different. How different? I don’t know, I guess we’ll soon find out. From what I could tell, Grishin has fast and powerful hands, and he’s coming in at a sizable reach and height advantage (4 inch height, 5.5 inch reach). The reach advantage is going to be advantageous simply due to Grishins tendency to strike at range, and he loves mixing it up as well. Despite not throwing and landing a whole lot during his fight against Tybura, there was a nice split in targeted shots, 50% to the head, 22% to the body and 27% to the legs, what this tells me is that he’s methodical with his striking and doesn’t just headhunt, he slowly takes apart his opponent, evenly distributing damage. This is an interesting fight but at the moment i’m leaning on Grishin winning this one. He’s a much larger fighter compared to Antigulov and lets be real, Antigulov will be coming out hard in the first round, and that’s going to lead to his downfall. Grishin via KO R2 Middleweight Jun Yong Park (11-4-0, NS) v John Phillips (22-10-0, NS) - This is a fun one. Park looked absolutely incredible in his fight against Barriault, the boxing was as slick as it gets and he looked very calm. His output was insane during the 3 round fight, he landed 5 takedowns and the volume he threw was the perfect mix between accurate and powerful, I wish i could show some clips because his striking was absolutely crisp. I promise ill get clips working eventually, Imgur is still being a pain and Gfycat doesn’t like violence. Park isn’t necessarily a perfect fighter, but he’s one that absolutely surprised me. Keep an eye out for Park because he’s going to win this one. Phillips recently got mauled by Chimaev a couple of months ago and is looking for a quick comeback, but I don’t think this was a fair fight to make, but all that aside, Phillips is 1-4 in the UFC, but the level of competition that Phillips has faced is up there, Holland, Marshman, Byrd and now Chimaev? All very high level fighters. I don’t know how Phillips will handle this one because Park is so well rounded and powerful, I just don’t really see much advantage that Phillips has over Park, but this is MMA, anything can happen, a fighter can go from relatively bad to insanely good in a span of one camp. I have Park coming into this fight. Park via KO R2 Women’s Flyweight Gillian Robertson (#13) (8-4-0, NS) v Polyana Botelho (8-2-0, NS) - Robertson has one of the highest finish rates in the women’s UFC division I think. Like, not the highest, but she’s up there. None of her wins in the UFC have gone the whole way, only her recent bout against Casey was fairly close to being a decision but boy did she pull out a great submission win. Robertson is as filthy as they get, and I don’t mean that in a bad way, what I mean is that she goes all out to get a finish. She’s never complacent with just a decision, she’s always active in the fight and pushes the pace. What she does is something not many women do and i’m surprised not that many people are talking about her. Viana has been making fairly solid strides in the UFC, with one highlight reel knockout against Syuri Kondo back in 2018, her recent fight against Mueller was by far her most competitive so far, tying Mueller 47 strikes to 47 strikes, the only reason why she won on paper was those takedowns, I really feel like Robertson will just become a thug in this fight and look for the kill very quickly, I mean, with that finish rate, it’s more hype than anything else really. Robertson via Sub R2 Main Card Lightweight Mateusz Gamrot (D) (17-0-0, 17 FWS) v Guram Kutateladze (D) (11-2-0, 8 FWS) - This is an exceptional double debut and the Matchmakers did both fighters a service in making this the first main card fight. Gamrot is the king of KSW from what I can see, the dude is undefeated and has a great mix of decision, sub and KO wins. This dude is a fucking monster. Power, chaos, speed, and durability, there is something special about him. I don’t use that word often, special, and when I do, it’s about fighters like Izzy or Chimaev or even Gaethje. In my personal opinion, Gamrot is up there amongst the best. Even if he loses, he has a legacy behind him, and he’s only 29! I don’t watch KSW, but I am well aware that he has dominated the promotion for a few years now, and there’s no sign of him slowing down. This dude is really something. Kutateladze is also up there amongst the best, being a proud owner of an 8 fight winning streak, Kutateladze is a finish machine, with a lot of his knockouts coming in the first round, he seems to be a man of power and aggression, and I love that. This is a crazy fight, I don’t know a whole lot about either fighter, but there is a lot of hype surrounding this fight, especially about Gamrot finally being in the UFC. This is a great year for polish fighters and if Gamrot explodes in the UFC… well, that just makes the Lightweight division so much more sexy. Camrot via KO R1 Welterweight Claudio Silva (14-1-0, 14 FWS) v James Krause (27-8-0, NS) - I’m still pretty pissed off about Krause losing that split decision. Silva is on an insane streak right now and for very good reason, he’s an exceptional submission artist, and it seems that his career revitalization from 2018 onwards has proven to be pretty great for Silva, 3 straight submission wins against some tough customers, Silva has proven to us that he’s a force to be reckoned with on the ground. The only unfortunate thing is he’s reaching 40 and even though he’s not showing any signs of slowing down, Krause is one massive mountain to climb. If Silva can submit Krause (who is a first degree black belt in BJJ) then he has shown that age is irrelevant. Krause recently lost a hard fought fight against Trevin Giles on a one day notice, no camp, nothing, just make weight and fight, that’s some gangsta shit right there and I can’t praise Krause enough, that’s a real fighter. Krause is a phenomenal grappler and also has a mean kickboxing game, he’s snappy and fluid, but also incredibly violent. Krause is a very long fighter, his long limbs allow him to cover distance, get out of danger, or wrap his legs around his opponent like a damn kraken, and he has fought for a very very long time, He has faced some incredibly tough challenges and demolished them. This is a fight that will have everyone at the edge of their seat. If both fighters decide to grapple, I can see Krause getting the upper hand especially if he’s on his back because those legs are very long and it will allow him lock in various submission locks, whether its an armbar, arm triangle, omoplata or something else, Krause has the capabilities to do it. I have Krause on this one. Krause via UD Featherweight Thomas Almeida (22-3-0, 2 FLS) v Jonathan Martinez (12-3-0, NS) - That’s a name I haven’t heard of in a long time… Almeida has been on quite the hiatus due to an eye injury, and that inactiveness will be pretty interesting considering he’s facing a tough fighter in Martinez. Almeida is a knockout artist, a flashy, wild striker who has a Black Belt in Muay Thai, his level of striking is certainly up there, but it’s his power and sporadic striking that can throw off his opponent and put them to sleep. My only biggest worry is that he’s been inactive for such a long time, there’s no doubt going to be some ring rust. Martinez has had a challenging time in the UFC, not really maintaining a streak but he has had some major success especially in his recent fight against Saenz, There is one thing that is very consistent when it comes to Martinez, and that’s his kicks, they’re fast and they are deceptive with the target, the angle he fires them and the aggression after landing is insane. If Martinez is to win this fight, he has two very clear options. Set the pace and become aggressive, or wrestle. Almeida gets taken down quite frequently and if he does have ring rust, he probably will be exhausted from the constant pressure of wrestling. I am intrigued in the return of Almeida and I feel like he’s going to be as explosive as ever, but Martinez and those kicks… they’re something great. Very tough prediction for me to make, and perhaps a controversial pick considering the majority of predictors on Tapology are going with Almeida, but Martinez has a very good chance at winning this one. Martinez via KO R2 Light Heavyweight Modestas Bukauskas (11-2-0, 7 FWS) v Jimmy Crute (11-1-0, NS) - Bukauskas made his UFC debut a few months ago and ended the fight in somewhat of a unique way. He landed elbows against Michailidis in the final seconds of the first round, which didn’t knock out Michailidis in the traditional sense, but you could tell he was not very aware of what just happened. Bukauskas is a very interesting prospect and the one thing that stood out to me was how light he was, he floated around the octagon, he fought like a welterweight but carried the power of a light heavyweight, everything he landed had that extra power behind it, he’s a physical specimen and he’s going to be a very interesting fighter on the UFC Roster, this year has been incredible for Light Heavyweight debuts. Crute was an undefeated champ in the making before his defeat against Cirkunov, but it takes more than that to crumble and trip us Aussies. Crute is a visceral fighter who has insane power in his hands, but he is also an accomplished grappler, having a black belt in BJJ, his recent submission against Michal Oleksiejczuk was picture perfectly executed, and his 100% finish rate in the UFC has no doubt escalated the hype surrounding him. He has a very bright future ahead of him, but he’s got a very tough prospect ahead of him. If Crute can get a hold of Bukauskas and drag him down into Crutes realm, then Bukauskas is done. But I feel like Bukauskas will be able to handle the pressure and keep moving away from danger. This is again, another controversial pick but I got Bukauskas on this one. He’s got the reach advantage (7.6 inch) to retreat and counter, but the one thing i’m worried about is his takedown defence, I could very much get this prediction wrong so please don’t bet based on this prediction. Bukauskas via KO R2 Co-Main Event Women’s Flyweight Jessica Andrade (#4) (20-8-0, 2 FLS) v Katlyn Chookagian (#2) (14-3-0, NS) - This is an interesting match up. Andrade is moving up in weight, which is an insane thing to hear because if she’s got power and strength at Strawweight, just imagine how insane she’ll look at Flyweight. Andrade is a very powerful, aggressive kickboxer, her second fight against Namajunas was impressive despite her loss, her rapid head movement and forward pressure was awesome to see and I hope she brings the same heat coming into this fight, I mean, she has to, she’s extremely small compared to Chookagian, she needs to get inside range and it’ll be interesting to see how she manages that, because I doubt she’s going to attempt to grapple because well, grappling with someone taller than you is never a good idea. Chookagian is a lengthy kickboxer who is great at range, and is a very intelligent fighter. An example of her knowledge is when she was fighting Antonina Shevchenko earlier this year, she knew Shevchenko was an excellent kickboxer and Muay Thai fighter, so she went for the takedown and controlled her for a total of 10 and a half minutes. Chookagian is perhaps going to retire after this fight and I feel like that will be at the back of her mind throughout this fight, and i’m not a psychologist by any stretch of the imagination, but I feel like that might impede her performance, if she gets clipped, she might panic and think “shit so this is how my career ends” and all that stuff. We’ve seen it countless times from fighters who have done this for a long time and I just have an odd feeling that’s what is going to go through her mind. Anyway, back to the prediction. I have Andrade on this one, Andrade at 115 was awesome, but Andrade at 125 could be insane. Andrade via KO R3 Main Event Featherweight Brian Ortega (#8) (14-1-0, NS) v Chan Sung Jung (#3) (16-5-0, 2 FWS) - This is a match up that’s failed to happen like, three times now it feels, it’s been a fight that has constipated the division for a year now and it really, really needs to freaking happen. Ortega showed true modelo spirit when he fought Holloway, eating all those shots but kept going forward up until the fight got called off in between rounds. Ortega is an insane submission artist, his chokes are his main weapon on the ground and if he sees a neck exposed, he’s going for it like a shark when it smells blood. But this fight is different, he’s fighting the fucking Korean Zombie and that’s not an easy thing to do. Jung has been fighting for a very long time, He has 21 kickboxing bouts, winning 15 of them, he has a black belt in Judo, Hapkido (a variant of Judo that involves strikes), Taekwondo, and a brown belt in BJJ, Korean Zombie has covered every single basis in martial arts, he is as perfect as they get, regardless of his record. KZ has a wide variety of techniques, but he is most well known for his forward pressure and ability to keep moving forward regardless of what is hitting him, he smothers his opponent in combo’s and gives them very little time to recuperate and breath in between bursts. KZ is a very dangerous opponent for anyone, and he’s only 33, he’s got another 3 years ahead of him before we see a deterioration in his performance. I got KZ on this fight, I don’t see Ortega being a big threat in this fight in my honest opinion. Jung via KO R3 That's it! Some controversial picks here, figured i'd spice it up a tiny bit hahaha. I'm still very disappointed in the fact that my boy Gane won't be fighting :( Was looking forward to him destroying his opponent. 2020.10.14 23:46 PrimusAldente87My Summarized Thoughts on Every Fighter in the KAT and Purgatory Tournaments (Sorry for the Length)
A little disclaimer before we begin: I will mention a few other characters who have stood out for whatever reason, and I will only mention the Purgatory fighters who have fought up to chapter 80 since I don't have enough info on the others to make a solid opinion. This is also purely my opinion as both a fighter myself and fan of the series. If I insult one of your faves, feel free to tell me off. KAT
Kazuoyamashita: I want him to be my actual father. He seems like a good dad.
Niko Tokita: Daddy~
Niko Tokita: SHOW ME THE GUY IN OMEGA ALREADY.
Himuro: I kind of wish they did more with him, but I feel like he has a good role. I like him.
Hassad: I feel like this guy was shafted and that's a damn shame. I would have loved to see how the authors portrayed shuri'te, the style of karate he practices.
Kaburagi Koji: He's manga-only for those who are anime exclusive, and long story short, FUUUUUCK this guy. He's not... he's not BAD, really. He just disgusts me.
Togo Tomari: I want her to domme me. Yes, I'm aware I have weird tastes.
Karla Kure: Waifu for Laifu
Elena Robinson: I'd say Waifu for Laifu, but Mokichi would kill me.
Katahara Retsudo: I really want to see this guy in action and the fact that we probably won't annoys me.
Katahara Sayaka: Hooooot. Also, a dumb broad.
Kushida Rin: Who? Seriously, who? She serves absolutely zero purpose to the plot. There's a reason she was removed the anime entirely.
Adam Dudley: I adore him as a fighter. I respect the idea of his self-taught "street style" that they mention in the manga, and the idea that ice hockey turned him into the fighter he is is super creative in my opinion. As a character... eh.
Cosmo Imai: There are reasons I relate to this character that I'd rather not get into, but nevertheless, I loved watching his character arc go from happy-go-lucky soft boy who loved fighting to a serious warrior and threat. Also, his friendship with Adam is super wholesome. If he wasn't a prodigy, he wouldn't have survived the KAT as long as he did, figuratively or literally, and he was the one character I genuinely wanted to see defeat Ohma.
Kono Haruo: This character's backstory breaks my heart because he's basically an abused child. I want to see him go back to being the Avatar of Indra, not just because it would have been a better character arc for him than getting BIGGER after becoming a pro wrestler, but also because it would be a visual way to show he'd be mentally healing from what I figured is abuse.
Akoya Seishu: One of my favorite characters. That's not to say he's a morally righteous one, but that he's super well written and fun to read about. It may just be because my idea of justice is "everyone can change" which is the polar opposite of his, but either way, I can't wait to see how his fight in Omega ends up. Personally, I want to see him lose so badly that he becomes BROKEN.
Mokichi Robinson: Easily one of my top 3 favorite characters, but I honestly have no idea why. I know I adore his fighting style, and I'd be kidding myself if I didn't admit I liked his backstory, and that he's a monk who's willing to fight God himself, but other than that, I have no idea why I like him so much.
Kure Raian: I am not saying by any means that he's overhyped- I just don't GET the hype. He's definitely a great foil for Ohma, and the devil horns he gains during his Removal are the coolest aesthetic choice in the series, but I just don't see why people like him so much.
Inaba Ryu: Interesting fighting style, but otherwise I don't care.
(I'm going in order of brackets, but I'll save Ohma for last.)
Murobuchi Gozo: I think every single manga reader of the series unanimously agrees that this guy was done dirty in the anime. He had the single coolest fighting style out of anyone else with each technique being based on the events of a decathlon, and he really showed what fan-favorite Wakatsuki was capable of during the beginning, and the anime gave him NOTHING.
Wakatsuki Takeshi: I don't care much for him. He's definitely a wholesome boy and someone I'd be more than happy to share a drink or train with, but without his herculean strength and his blast core, I don't really see him as much of a great fighter, and being a fighter myself, that loses points with me. Every single fight he's in, every single one, ends with a single powerful strike from him rather than the actual skill to use his techniques, so each of his wins feel... cheap. I want to like him, I really do, but he leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
Sawada Keizaboru: Yet another perverted rendition of transgender characters in anime. I'm a westerner, so I shouldn't really complain about the cultural standards of the far-east, and because of that I'm leaving politics out of it, but showing a stereotype of a marginalized group to paint them in a negative light annoys the hell out of me. Again, this isn't political. All I'm saying is that I dislike the conflict others bring on people's identities. That said, his fighting style is freaking amazing. A lot of fighters I know do a lot of dancing for similar reasons.
Julius Reinhold: If the Kengan series didn't take place in the same universe as "How Heavy are the Dumbbells you Lift?" I would hate this character so much more, but given the... metaphysical constraints of this universe, a fighter like Reinhold makes more sense. I've heard a lot of body builders, strong men, and weight lifters boast about how raw strength, size, and weight are superior to real technique, and they get the stuffing beaten out of them every single time, so having a fighter like him taken seriously is a major irritation to me. Overall, I get the universe, so he gets a pass.
Muteba Gizenga: One of three fighters that have made me to question my sexuality, the first being Niko Tokita! All I'm thinking about while writing this are his tight oiled up abs. Putting my homoflexible sexual preference aside, his character design was astounding because he was originally supposed to be your average Russian mercenary until the editors said that was played out, and that one decision made him a fan favorite. Seeing his fighting style was even better because, much like the Kure Clan, he goes in for the kill and attacks the vitals as soon as he can, but he also does so in order to wear down his opponents rather than just kill him as he was trained to do the same thing to the infrastructures of entire countries. That said, knowing he's a mercenary, knowing full well he can't fight as hard as he can like the other fighters, and seeing him forfeit his match against Wakatsuki because his body was getting too badly damaged was a fitting end for him.
Meguro Masaki: Freakin' weirdo... Judo is my favorite martial art aesthetically, though.
Sekibayashi: Again, another fighter I want to hate, only this one doesn't get a pass as much as the more I saw him fight made me learn to love him. His fighting style is... something... But his boisterous, wholesome personality is what made me adore the hell out of him.
Kiozan Takeru: I don't care one way or the other about his story line, but his sumo fighting style was interesting. Not only that, but I did some research on it and found out that the claim of sumo originally being a form of eclecticism wasn't unfounded. It makes me wonder what sumo would be like today if it didn't end up specializing in grappling.
Yoroizuka Saw Paing: Arguably the most tragic storyline in the entire series (Saw "Pain," am I right), and discovering Lethwei was my single favorite part of the series- it sounds pretty badass. I would say he's not in my Top 3, maybe not even Top 5, but I love him for the sole purpose of the fact he has one brain cell bouncing around his head like a window's screensaver.
Karo Yoshinari: THIS GUY SCARES ME! Do any of you have an idea how afraid of the ocean I am?! This guy fights sperm whales regularly to defend his village. Regularly! How can you NOT be scared of him?!
Nezu Masami: I hate the fact that he was used for the sole purpose to show how dangerous Rei is and really didn't do much else besides that. He's become the butt of several jokes in the fandom. His pompadour is pretty cool though!
Rei Mikazuchi: I may be the odd man out on this one, but I love his Raishin style was scientifically explained when he lost his match against Kuroki to be all about the sprinting muscles in his calves, as well as the loss of his mental limitations. Seeing how he evolved after his fight with Kuroki did my heart good because instead of fighting for love, he learns all of his flaws as a fighter. Plus, I'm a romantic at heart, and even though it ended poorly, his relationship with "The Queen Bee" was cute as hell. I do think the Raishin style was overly simplistic, but besides that, I have nothing but positive feelings towards him.
Rihito: DO. MY. BOY. BETTER. YE. FECKS.
Kuroki Gensai: I think I love this guy a little too much, to be honest. He's a weirdly good teacher, and to me he's like the human version of an owlbear from Dungeons and Dragons, but his calm and level head is what sets me off. Everyone respects this guy. Everyone. He stood out in the series because the top level fighters recognized him as the only true martial arts master, and that set him apart from everyone else, and the Kaiwan style was phenomenal given both that and all the training it took to condition his hands to the level they were in the first place. I don't blame Rihito for wanting to learn under him.
Nikaido Ren: Can we all agree this guy sucks? Please??
Kiryu Setsuna: This is the only character I will say this about. Kiryu is overhyped to all hell. His relation to Ohma and the story surrounding them was pretty good, but as a fighter, the fandom seems to collectively think he's much stronger than he really is. His athleticism is high, his tactics are good I guess, his techniques are deadly, but his claim to fame is nothing more than three really good techniques. He's not a good fighter, and a lot of others we consider to be low-level would be able to beat him just easily as Ohma and Kuroki did, and if not, then pretty close to it. Even if you don't already know the skills he sues, they're not super difficult to figure out for some of those fighters, and once they know the tricks, they'd be able to easily respond to them. I don't have any problems with Kiryu himself, but the cult-like appeal he has to the fandom is infuriating.
Chiba Takayuki: Not the most appealing character to most, but I like him. Someone who is able to perfectly copy another fighter's abilities would make a real threat to anyone, even pressuring someone like Hatsumi until he made one crucial mistake that ended the fight. I'm definitely exaggerating the term "pressuring," mind you, but nevertheless, Chiba only solidifies the idea that Kengan Ashura should be a fighting game.
Hatsumi Sen: This is the only character I have a genuine hatred for. It has nothing to do with the character himself- both his personality and fighting style are incredible. He's definitely got that lazy asshole vibe that I can't get enough of, but when you're a slow starter in a real fight, that's a potentially deadly mistake, and Hatsumi's inability to get to full speed is almost blasphemy. It took him what? Four days of intense meditation and two fights for him to be at full power? What kind of nonsense is that?!
Hanafusa Hajime: I want a doctor like him to treat me if I ever get sick.
Bando Yohei: Again, I feel like this is another character that's overhyped for the same reason Kiryu is, but I ultimately have no qualms with the guy. Plus, it makes sense for a tournament like the KAT to have a fighter that's nothing more than a blatant serial killer participating.
Gaolong Wongsawat: I have referred to myself as a Gaolong Fanboy in the past so that alone should tell you that he's my favorite character. As a Muay Thai fighter myself, and a self taught boxer, seeing him fight was almost- almost -like watching myself on the screen/page, and he just seems like a really honorable dude. I hate that the fandom doesn't consider him to be stronger than what we do, yet think Kiryu and Bando are stronger than they are. I... really have nothing else to say here, though.
Kaneda Suikichi: God Bless this small child. The manga definitely did him more justice than the anime did since it explained that he had actual martial arts training, and not something he simply developed for the sake of his predictions. The problem here is that he not only gets called out as a weakling and recognizes that he's a weakling, but it's later showed in the manga that this is probably the only thing he'll ever be considering several other characters already have a superior version of his trump card, his predictions, in their arsenal. One of them even mastered his predictions and improved upon them in a matter of 24 hours. I feel sorry for him.
Okubo Naoya: I don't want to call him the "best fighter in the series" as much as he's the most culturally relevant given his MMA. He's ridiculously strong, that much is certain given how he was able to push R1 Agito to his very limit, and I hate that they didn't do more with him and have him succeed more, so I'm looking forward to how they use him in Omega. He also perfectly represents what MMA is all about, and a lot of people wouldn't understand the crucial effectiveness of cross training without his portrayal. I don't care for him much as a character since he's pretty one dimensional and has next to no development, but his fight with Agito will always be one of my favorite in all of anime.
Kanoh Agito: I relate to this character a little more than I should... This guy's entire arc is tragedy at its finest, and watching him evolve and develop over the course of the series was a sight to behold, and one of the major reasons I continued reading until the end. I was disappointed that he didn't get to fight Yumigahama in Omega, but more's the point, I guess.
Ohma Tokita: I didn't really see Ohma as an interesting character for a pretty odd reason that a lot of people can't relate to. I was bullied as a kid, like many people were, but what I went through was so bad that I had to get comfortable with the idea that I might not make it home alive for a period of 5 years, and this does some serious damage to a kid that I see in both Ohma and Ryuki (who a lot of this applies to, but my thoughts on him are different). When you have to focus so much on simply surviving, your emotional and social growth suffers. What I see in Ohma and Ryuki is a level of borderline, low level autism, common in people who had this kind of trauma, and because that strikes so close to him, I don't see Ohma as a relatable character as much as I see him as... a person, and I'm not interested in his story just like I'm not interested in the story of my next door neighbor. I'm not going to lie to you and say his death wasn't sad. A lot of people point to that as one of the saddest moments in the series, but I teared up more at seeing Kanoh and Cosmo lose just because they struck more of a cord with me than Ohma did since I see him no different than the customers I see at the grocery store. I simply have no reason to care.
Koga: A lot of people in the fandom seem to mistake what his storyline is. He is NOT- I repeat, he is NOT learning pro wrestling and MMA. If he finds another teacher, and he probably will, he is PROBABLY NOT going to learn their style. Everything up to this point has been nothing more than building upon what he already knows and remove his flaws to make him a better fighter. He's even relearing karate, or rather learning true karate, just so he can improve upon the style he already has. It's a pretty decent storyline, in my opinion.
Jose: Who??? Cares?????
Nitoku: As a struggling author myself, and considering Sambo scares the piss out of me, I want to see what he's really capable of.
Hayami Masaki: Hi-Ho! Kermit de Frog here!
Goah Ryuki: SWEET BABY PUPPY BOY!!!!
Misasa: Soft anime pretty boy made me question my sexuality! That is all.
Carlos Medel: In my opinion, he had and Gaolong had the best fight in the tournament up to this point, and seeing him take advantage of Purgatory rules in the very first fight, taking out one of Kengan's best fighters in the process, was story telling gold that really showed us how much of a threat this whole deal really is. He was also a perfect foil for Gaolong because they both tried to master striking, but did so with two wildly different methods more closely suited to their unique styles. Not only that, but it was a guilty pleasure for me to see Carlos' backstory address the issue with using purely boxing in a street fight when you're up against serious fighters- it's too limited. That said, I don't really see why everyone hypes this character as much as they do. Great character? Of course! As great as people say? I don't understand.
Toa Mudo: This character made me think the first "round," if you will, was nothing but personal grudge matches. The first fight was history's two best boxers going at it, then it was the two indirect students of Kuroki, and lastly, we have the two big guys. That said, everything about this guy was derivative, from his mutated Niko Style to his backstory basically being Haruo's and Hassads mixed together. Not to mention, he's literally just a retexture of Julius. I get that with such a big cast, you're going to have some similarities, and while that's a tragedy, it still means that these characters suffer.
Yumigahama Hikaru: The fandom seems to collectively agree that his story was handled horribly up to this point, so I'm curious to see where it goes from here. That said, up until now, who was this guy supposed to be, exactly? Nega-Agito? Instead of evolving, he took the bare minimum of each martial art he could find and tried to fuse them into one and only ever used real martial arts when he was backed into a corner, and this is literally the exact opposite of Agito Kanoh living and breathing martial arts with his very soul, evolving to better himself as much as he possibly could. Not only that, but their personalities are in such contrast with each other, it makes me think that Monke had to have been designed with some kind of Negaverse idea in mind.

2020.10.14 22:56 MemeTimeRadioHourUK conservative opinions on Uk policy ideas (immigration, unions, advertising, electoral reform etc)
I would call myself a libertarian. I am a Marxist in that I use a materialistic interpretation of history and events. I have some ideas that I think would benefit the UK. Some of which are in line with conservative ideas. I would love to know what you guys think or what you think would be a better idea. Please criticize. I hope to have a dialogue about this as much as possible. Drugs de criminalise all drugs (much like portugal) treat it as a mental health issue. A lot of people take drugs because of homelessness and poverty so by dealing with those hard drug use will go down. Legalise Cannabis, Mushrooms (and most hallucinegics), LSD, MDMA and Cocaine (https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2009/jun/13/bad-science-cocaine-study). tax them inline with the estimated costs for misuse of them. regulate them like tobacco and alcohol. Obesity and Food Ban the sale of energy drinks to children below 16. ban the sale of very sweet confectiionary and drinks to children below 16 (some mexican states have done it recently), This includes in schools. tax very fatty, sugary or nutritionly rare foods in line with what the estimated costs are for the NHS to deal with the health problems caused by them (much the same way we do with alcohol, tobacco and in my tax system other drugs). Possibly make it mandatory to fortify very cheap foods with minerals and vitamins so the impoverished can get more nutrients. although the body doesnt absorb these very well so it might be pointless. Make it illegal for a company/business to throw away food stuff and make them donate it to foodbanks/food charities. Advertising/product placement/Games/Gambling Ban all adverts to children in any way. Ban alcohol ads, vaping ads, gambling ads, payday loan ads, ads for big SUV/highly polluting vehicles. Ban product placement, ban TV shows for kids that have toys explicitly linked to them. Ban Loot box system in games. Make fixed odds betting machines have lower returns. Either tax very highly online gambling sites (spin wheel style), forced break periods or make it a state monolopy. Gambling is effectively a license to print money. why shouldn't the state take the proceeds from what is a worthless noncontributing part of the economy. All ads that have photoshopped used need to a sign saying they've been photoshopped and very thin models have to have a medical certificate that they are healthy (like france). NHS repeal the Blair laws making the NHS act more a competitive business which have proved to ineffective. Make the English NHS system more in line with the Scottish system. Tax or in some make people who do more dangerous activities pay a small amount extra for the increased likelihood of needing the services of the NHS like motorcyclists, horse riders, extreme sportspeople. Free speech repeal a lot of the Blair era censorship legislation. repeal with 2014 porn ban. prostitution legalize brothels. but make prostitution licensed to stop sex trafficking. Mandate the wearing of a condom. Possibly make it that you can only be a prostitute if you hold a british passport to stop sex trafficking from abroad. Trade Unions repeal the anti-trade union legislation. Electoral reform I think a system like Single Transferrable Vote would be better than FPTP. I think that registered political parties should somehow get some minimum funding from the state to facilitate a healthy and varied democracy. Remove the hereditary peerages from the house of lords. availability of credit I don't think payment plans for normal consumer goods should be available. I think it should be harder to get a pay day loan than it currently is. Fines I think that fines for speeding, other fine-able offenses should be means tested and shouldn't have a cap. Copyright I think that Copyright should expire for everything after 50 years. So at the this point everything from before 1969 should be in the public domain. I think any British citizen creator who leaves the UK to not pay income tax should have the copyright for their work removed in the UK when they do leave. Welfare Introduce Universal basic income in the UK. replace all the means tested and tedious bureaucracy associated with current system. I think it should start from 18 years old and increase slightly each year. Maybe start at 5,000 pounds and by your thirties move up to 10,000 pounds by the time you want to start having kids etc. I think UBI would make work always pay more than being on benefits. It would disincentive benefits fraud as well as people having children to acquire more benefits. Tax I do believe in a progressive taxation system. I think the tax free threshold should be raised. I think the brackets for taxation are good at the moment but I would add higher tax thresholds at higher rates e.g. 50% at 200,000, 60% at 500,000. I am unsure what the upper limit should be for tax rate or income. The rich will leave anyway (Jim ratcliffe most recenty) no matter what the tax rate is. If they ever wants to come into the UK they should have to pay to do so. If they have a knighthood it should be taken away. Immigration. remove all EU citizens not in critical under supplied or high paying jobs from the UK as well migratory workers from outside the EU. Syrian Civil war refugees should go back as well. basically as many people as possible should be made to go back to their country of origin without directly endangering their lives. I think the pay threshold for workers to legally migrate here should be much higher probably 40,000 pounds a year. there should be not net migration to the UK each year. children and population growth I think the UK should aim for net 0% population growth. I think couples who want to have kids should be made to screen for any hereditary recessive genetic diseases before they plan to have a child so they can know if they're kid is going to be disabled. Possibly people should have to have in the womb embryo testing as well to see if theyre child has any genetic diseases. legalise child euthanasia (like belgium and the netherlands https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Groningen_Protocol). I think people should be discouraged from having lots of children especially those without the means to provide for them. however if people do decide to have kids I think the provision for parenting should be a lot. 2+ years of paid maternity leave. free parenting lessons, support as much as possible the needs of the child and mother in the critical early bonding years. Ban all Child beauty pageants including trans ones (like france has done). I don't think childen can legally consent to hormone replacement drugs. I think the age of criminal responsibility should be raised should be raised to about 14. I think there are arguments to lower the age of consent in the UK to 15. the environment Library of things/Repair cafes in towns and cities to be able to more easily repairs good or not have to buy in the first place. Government subsidy scheme to better insulate homes across country. More extensive use of nuclear fission energy for electric generation. Large scale food waste reclamation for Compost or animal feed. Subsidy for Ground source heat pumps for poor households Subsidy for Thermal exchangers in home for poor households Make planned obselescene illegal. Make right to repair legally mandated. simplify the amount and types of plastic products to make it easier to recycle goods. Ban non recyclable plastics from being used in single use items. Make products label their expected lifetime (from average use) so consumer knows what a good long lasting product is. For large electric goods perhaps put a minimum expected lifespan for it to be sold in the UK. I think you could legislate to make products illegal from rainforests or unsustainable harvested forest. Tax loopholes make all gift-aid illegal, make art donations as tax write off illegal, donations to think tanks, charities illegal as tax write-offs, currently if you live outside the UK for more than 6 months you don't pay any income tax. I think the amount of income tax you pay should be proportionate for how long you spend in country with a bare minimum of 20% (estimate). Make shell companies illegal so large multinationals can't escape to tax havens and not pay corporations tax. If they don't ban them from trading in the UK. This may need to be done in a coalition of states working together. education repeal Blair era education legislation that created needless hoops and paper work for teachers. repeal new laws that teachers can you sources from anti-capitalist, anti-democratic sources etc. repeal the Gove/Cameron legislation that made schools behave like businesses. The point of school is for the kds to work hard and earn qualifications not the teacher. It is an inherently discriminatory system. allow at GCSE much more education in technical qualifications. e.g. bricklaying, carpentry, electricians etc, machine work. I don't think they need to start at 16 or above. I think theres an argument that children should be able to leave school at 16. Some of the courses they do are pointless. Apprenticeship pay is so low that in the short term it makes more sense to get a minimum wage job. Atleast make apprenticeship pay in line with minimum wage to incentivise it rather than literally force kids to be extremely cheap labour. self defense I think it should be legal to carry around pepper spray, mace or stun gun. The criminals already have weapons. Why not decriminalise the ability for an individual to defend themselves especially women. Free female self defence classes. BBC release all BBC created media onto the Iplayer. The British Tax payer paid for it. Why shouldn't they be able to access it. Perhaps make a BBC iplayer app to host it all for foreigners to use and pay for like Netflix. International business Make corporations who sell goods in the UK prove that they don't come from slave/child labour. If they don't then they can't sell that product in the UK. VAT remove VAT for resold, recycled products, upcycled products, products that are good the planet (re-chargeable batteries, battery chargers). effectively rebrand VAT as a carbon tax. completely remove VAT on sanitary products, all energy efficiency/saving products. Voting like Australia make it mandatory to go to the polling booth. University make universities offer their humanities subjects as online only option so that people can do their degree from anywhere and not necessarily in the expensive university town. the course would be cheaper. Make foreign students pay for their healthcare when they are here. Tourism make foreigners pay to get into British Museums especially the big ones in london. I realise this may be cost prohibitive for smaller Museums. Housing change the rental legislation that tenants can legally not pay full rent if a landlord hasn't done repairs to the standard of the property when the renter moved in. No foreigner can own more than 2 homes in the UK (in thailand you can't own any property unless you're thai) Cap the number of a properties anyone can own. especially for buy to let landlords. If a house has sat vacant for too long it has to be put on the market as a competitive price. houses cannot be treated as an investment where it doesn't matter if its occupied or not. a roof over ones head is a right. Homelessness expand the access to homeless shelters. the best way to stop human and sex trafficking as well hard drug use to is stop homelessness. migratory farm workers ban migratory farm workers in the UK. there are thousands of Uni, GCSE, college and A level students who have months off school in the picking season. Why not get them to pick fruit and vegetables? same thing goes for homeless people. Get them all to pick fruit and veg. littering & dog tax small tax on having a dog to pay for dog park maintenance, dog bins, etc. small tax on single use packaging to pay for more Bins on high street, bins to be emptied more regularly to reduce littering. Same small tax on tobacco for cigarette butt bins. These are all my ideas. Please critique them.

JEROME: Yesterday an individual who had come forward on the weekend to get tested received a positive result. DHHS immediately tested 12 other people at her workplace at a tyre shop in Shepparton and identified two further positives. As of late yesterday evening, there were three positive cases, nine negative cases in Shepparton, all associated with a tyre shop. Yesterday afternoon DHHS traced back the source of the infection to a Melbourne resident who travelled with a permit to Shepparton on 30 September. That was the original cause of the cluster as DHHS knows and understand it, within the Shepparton area. Other focus today is about responding to both the three positive cases but also a number of contacts that could have been made in the last 2-week period.
3AW: Head of Testing at DHHS tells @3AWNeilMitchell the 3 Shepp cases are linked to Kilmore & to Chaddie butcher shop & so further back to Frankston family cluster. Person who "was not covid safe" went from Melb to Kilmore, Benalla, & Shepparton but didn't fess up about Shepp visit. DHHS Testing boss Jeroen Weimar tells @3AWNeilMitchell yes, one person who contracted virus in Chaddie-butcher-spread went to a Kilmore cafe & sparked a cluster there; then stopped past Shepparton too where a new cluster has started. NO link to the +ve,-ve case at Benalla Oct 5. [source]

I had no idea how the app appeared on my phone, but it had. I had been having a lot of bad luck with relationships, and despite thinking things were working out great they would go an break my heart. The last woman said she was not looking for something long term to only get married less than a year later and have their first kid a little over a year after that. One before that was the ‘it’s not you it’s me’ line and left the state to not be heard from again. Then the one before that ended up her crying in my arms saying that she was not interested in guys: she’s now hooked up with some Neko and seems to be doing well. These non-humans, or monster-folk as some people call them in a derogatory way, have been appearing more and more recently and after all these years appear to be a part of the community. When I got this dating app and had my info uploaded into it, I was surprised to see that the profiles were all non-humans. I had never dated a non-human before. Have talked and chatted with a few before, but maybe it was a sign that being with a human was not for me. I had swiped right on a few profiles, but I was not sure if any of them would swipe right too and match with me. With my luck so far, maybe I was not meant to find love with a non-human too. Only time would tell. My profile; 30 y.o. Male. Single. Australian. 6’ tall, short brown hair, haze eyes, moderate build. Likes: sci-fi / fantasy / adventure movies and novels. Jazz music. Thai food. Wanting to meet someone face-to-face: maybe grab a hot chocolate somewhere and talk about a trashy movie that will be played on T.V. tonight. . . . . . . Hello MonsterGirlRP prompt reader. This RP would involve you matching on my profile and is chatting and eventually meeting up. How will I react when I see what type of non-human you are, and how will our relationship develop? Let us see what happens. We can discuss here via DM and can move across to discord if things seem to work out.

There has been one new case linked to the outbreak at the Chadstone Shopping Centre, taking the total to 35, and no new cases linked to the Oddfellows Café in Kilmore. The additional case at Chadstone attended the shopping centre during their acquisition period.
The total number of cases from an unknown source in the last 14 days (27 Sep 2020 – 10 Oct 2020) is 13 for metropolitan Melbourne and zero from regional Victoria. The 14-day period for the source of acquisition data ends 48 hours earlier than the 14-day period used to calculate the new case average due to the time required to fully investigate a case and assign its mode of acquisition.

2020.10.12 19:46 partypastorUnreached People Group of the Week - Turkish Cypriots of Cyprus
Sorry for the late post today guys, I had a busy morning. Meet the Turkish Cypriots of Cyprus! How Unreached Are They? Turkish Cypriots of Cyprus are 0.5% Christian. That means out of their 217,000 population, only maybe 1,000 of them are believers. To make that even more relatable, there is only 1 believer for every 200 unbelievers.
An extremely small number of the Turkish Cypriots are Christians. The Bible, Christian radio broadcasts, and the Jesus film are all available in the Turkish language. Strongly devoted to Islam, the Turkish Cypriots need much prayer and dedicated workers living among them so they will know that when they die, it is not how they live, but Who lives inside of them, that will bring them to heaven. Joshua Project
What are they like? Typical qualification that all people groups can't be summed up in small paragraphs and this is an over generalization.
Most of the Turkish Cypriots live in rural villages and rely on agriculture and trade for their livelihood. The land primarily consists of fertile plains, the inhabitants of which are blessed with a favorable climate that nourishes lush vegetation. Crops include fruits, wheat, barley, carrots and other vegetables, tobacco, and green fodder. Men handle most of the agricultural chores, but during harvest time the whole family helps with the farming duties. Those who prefer an urban lifestyle can find homes and plentiful jobs in the towns. The homes in Cyprus are typically made of wood or stone. They usually have two stories and flat roofs. Animals share the lower floor along with storage facilities. In single story houses, the women use the living room to work in during the day; at night it becomes the family's bedroom. Cyprus's excellent educational system provides free elementary education, for at least three of the five-year secondary education program, and technical training. As a result, there is very little illiteracy on the island. There are actually six universities in North Cyprus where Turkish Cypriots reside. These universities bring in people from all over the Muslim world. As a result of these universities and other factors younger generations are speaking English more and more. English is spoken widely as a second language, and many older Cypriot Turks know Greek. Thanks to the healthy climate and well-organized health services, the people are generally healthy and the island, as a whole, is free of major diseases such as malaria and tapeworm cysts. Craftsmen skilled in calligraphy, ceramics, and metalwork help keep the Turkish culture alive in Cyprus. Rug weaving is also an important skill because rugs are part of the Islam prayer ritual. Girls and young women are responsible for weaving the beautiful rugs. Marriage is important in a Muslim culture and Turkish Cypriot girls usually marry at a young age. Marriages are usually between close kin, even between first cousins. Such intermarriage is common in a Muslim culture because it helps keep wealth within the extended family. The Turkish Cypriots are Caucasians; most have dark hair and brown eyes. They are known to be gentle, courteous, and hospitable to strangers. They are proud of their ethnic heritage and remain very loyal to Turkey. Joshua Project
The Turkish Cypriots live on the northern section of the island of Cyprus, located in the Mediterranean Sea, just south of Turkey. As the descendants of Turkish Ottoman invaders who conquered Cyprus in the 16th century, the Turkish Cypriot proudly maintain Turkish customs, traditions, and language (Turkish). Today, the Turkish Cypriots make up about one-fifth of the island's total population. Various estimates point out that at least half of the Turks in Northern Cyprus are settlers from Turkey who emigrated in the last 30 or 40 years. The Greeks, who inhabit the remainder of the island, have been enemies of the Turks since the Ottoman invasion. Cyprus became an independent republic in 1960, a move that was supposed to end warfare between the Greeks and the Turks. However, the bitterness continued, and when war erupted again in 1963, the Greeks won economic control of the island. Turkey invaded in 1974 and took control of the northern third of the island. Today, a border separates the two peoples, whose animosity has never allowed them to come to terms with one another. Joshua Project
What do they believe?
Almost all of the Turkish Cypriots are Muslims who practice Muslim ceremonies and follow Islamic beliefs. For example, they believe that death is the beginning of a new life; the dead person waits for resurrection to either heaven or hell, depending on the way he/she lived life on earth. They believe in the "evil eye," which is the power to harm someone just by looking at him. Joshua Project
How Can We Pray For Them?
Ask the Lord of the harvest to send forth laborers to live and work among the Turkish Cypriots.
Pray that God will raise prayer teams to break up the spiritual soil of Cyprus through worship and intercession.
Pray for effectiveness of the Jesus film among the Turkish Cypriots.
Ask God to anoint the Gospel as it goes forth via radio to the Turkish Cypriots.
Ask God to strengthen, encourage, and protect the small number of Turkish Cypriot Christians.
Ask the Lord to bring forth a triumphant Turkish Cypriot church for the glory of His name!
Pray for our nation (the United States), that we Christians can learn to come alongside our hurting brothers and sisters and learn to carry one another's burdens in a more Christlike manner than we have done historically.
Pray that in this time of chaos and panic that the needs of the unreached are not forgotten by the church. Pray that our hearts continue to ache to see the unreached hear the Good News.
Brothers, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved. (Romans 10:1) ____________________________________________________________________________________________ Here are the previous weeks threads on the UPG of the Week for Reformed
As always, if you have experience in this country or with this people group, feel free to comment or PM me and I will happily edit it so that we can better pray for these peoples! Here is a list of definitions in case you wonder what exactly I mean by words like "Unreached
The Tourism Authority of Thailand sent a list of the first group of STV (special tourist visa) Chinese tourists to the Thai consulate in Guangzhou on Oct 5. Foreign Affairs Ministry deputy spokesman Natapanu Nopakun, however, said no Chinese tourists had been to the consulate to apply for an STV
So the first group were meant to arrive on the 8th, but TAT did not send a single name until the 6th and to date not a single one has actuelly been to consulate to put in a visa application. Begs the question, where are TAT generating these lists from? Can we get TAT (and health and CAAT) out of the border reopening buisness and back to their usual lying about how much tourists that no one wants/like are such big spenders? 6 months, countless plans, and not a single official tourist has made it. In other news, certain embassies have quietly started issuing normal tourist visas again, though note some of new requirements, especially bank statements. Most people missed that with the STV visa announcement was a (intentionally?) badly worded change attached that basiclly opened country to all visas 60 days and over, so dependant on local embassy (for COE) basically all entry types are now valid for entry except, exemption, VOA and transit.
Statistics for translator provided by Wenyuan We implemented regex matching this month to reduce the number of posts that violate title-formatting rules, so that Ziwen doesn't have to remove as many, and OPs don't have to resubmit. This has resulted in a dramatic lessening of the number of posts with bad titles - from 913 last month to just 373 this month. In other news, this month also marked the first time the overall translated rate went below 50% - not sure why!
2020.10.11 21:34 tutetibiimperesNugu Roundup #60 - When Proud Pied April, Dress'd in all his trim, Hath put a Spirit of Youth in Every Thing- 201011 + Album Giveaway
Hello and welcome to the latest Nugu Roundup! What is this?: This is a weekly feature designed to highlight the unknown/underappreciated groups and soloists working hard in the Kpop world that often fall under the radar. Please share your own information, favorite performance videos, fanmeet stories, or anything else relevant below! Last week we spent time with Dreamcatcher's little brothers, D1CE! This week let's check out a group that's more on the 'underrated' side than the 'nugu' side, let's get to know April! Look at the first comment below for the winner of the fourteenth Nugu Roundup Album Giveaway, plus details on this week's album up for grabs! What is Nugu?: While in Korean it literally means 'Who' in the broader Kpop context it refers to groups that are generally unknown amongst the greater public. It doesn't have to mean they're extremely new, though it can, and there are of course varying degrees of 'unknown' which some groups having very strong niche fandoms and others being almost invisible. I take a fairly broad view and will include groups that may be known to some, but who don't have widespread name recognition. Let's get on with the show... ________________________________________________________ APRIL Who are they?: April is a six member girl group under DSP Media. While their name in Hangul 에이프릴 phonetically sounds much like 'April' it's also a compound word of 'A Frill' indicating they are pretty women, and with the April name means they want to present a warm and relaxing atmosphere like the month of April. Their fandom name is Fineapple, which is a combination of "Fine" meaning good, and "Apple" representing April. Company: DSP Media was originally one of the largest Kpop companies in the game, representing mega-hit artists such as Fin.K.L, SECHSKIES, and KARA. They lost ground in the transition from 2nd to 3rd generation groups and now represent April and co-ed group KARD. They also have a pre-debut 9 member boy group in development including two Produce X101 contestants. Other notable former artists include the girl group Rainbow and boy groups SS501 and A-JAX. Group Interviews
Facts: She is a former member of short-lived DSP Media group Puretty. She competed on Produce 101, falling just outside the top, and also in the Kara Project. She joined April following the departure of original members Somin (now a member of KARD) and Hyunjoo (who left to pursue acting). In addition to her time with Puretty she has been part of the special project groups CIVA and IBI. She has performed voice acting work for the animated TV series Pretty Rhythm Dear My Future, and has appeared in the dramas Secret Love, Boni-Hana Web Drama, Mohae Mohae, and Everyone's Love. While she was thrust into the position of leader due to her eldest-in-the-group-status she says that the other members have been invaluable in showing her the ropes since she joined the group after debut and she is known for having a beagle-like personality and playing around with her group-mates. She has practiced Muay-Thai and would like to learn Jiu-Jitsu. She was a trainee for over six years. She has mentioned that she has quite a bit of trainee debt still from her time in Puretty but has been paying it down and it now isn't as bad as it used to be. She has released a duet with fellow April member Chaewon called Clock (MV) and has collaborated with Voisper for Lovesome (MV), as well as releasing a special project single called Yellow (audio).
Facts: She is from Gongju, a small mountainous city in west-central Korea. She briefly assumed the role of leader in the group following the departure of Somin and before the addition of Chaekyung. She took part in the KARA Project. She is known as the mother of the group and has adopted mannerisms of an older lady on occasion. She has been in the Web Dramas Reply PyeongChang 100° F and Third Person Dating and has taken part in live theater with Hello, Malpan. She has a personal YouTube channel where she posts song covers and other content (link). In addition to her duet with Chaekyung she released a special winter duet with Somin called Me Inside You (audio) (that probably sounds better in Korean), and several OST tracks including I Need You (audio) with Kisum, Alone Again (audio) with Lee Jinsol, I Cried Loudly (MV) with Ha Hyeong On, and Humming (audio) with Daewon. She joined DSP Media as a trainee while she was still attending school and rode the bus from Gongju to Seoul and back again every day for practice. She was an excellent student and was in the running for 1st in her class. She attended Sungshin Women's University along with Chaekyung and the two have become close friends within the group. She is a big fan of pistachio nuts and enjoys cracking and snacking on them.
Facts: She is from Daejon, a city in central Korea known as Korea's Silicon Valley. She is a former JYP Trainee, leaving just before the Sixteen survival show due to opposition from her parents and lacking confidence in her abilities, but is still close with a number of members from Twice. She studied acting after leaving JYP and has appeared in a number of dramas including Extraordinary You and A-Teen. She has released duets with fellow-member Jinsol including My Story (MV), and Matter of Time (MV), as well as an OST Stars in the Night Sky (audio). She has been a special MC on Music Bank. She is known to be a very kind person and volunteered to work with disabled people in her youth and was also known as someone who would buy food for her friends when they were hungry and had no money. One of her favorite foods is makchang, which is grilled intestines, and she loves maesil-cha, a green plum drink. She was falsely accused of school bullying but the accuser then retracted the statement and said he made it all up. She obtained her driver's license this year.
Facts: She is from Daegu, and inland city in Southeastern Korea known for it's high prevalence of Buddhism and a growing fashion industry. She is known in the team for being forward with skinship and also developed a reputation for a tsundere-like attitude. She is said to resemble Goo Hara in both visuals and voice. She was an MC along with fellow-member Rachel for an MBC Children's Song show. She has recently been cast in what is being billed as the world's first 8K UHD Musical Film called K-School which will debut this December in Korea. She is the most courageous member and was the first in line to go on a bungee-jumping ride when the group went to an amusement park, however she is afraid of cats and has alluded to a negative childhood experience with them. She has been given the nickname 'Squirrel' but doesn't like it, and has been attempting to switch her nickname to 'Po-Do' which means 'Grape'. Bread is her favorite food.
Position: Main Rapper, Lead Dancer, Vocalist
Real Name: Sung Na Yeon
Age: 20 (IA)
Facts: She joined the group with Chaekyung after the departure of Somin and Hyunjoo. She is originally from Seoul but studied abroad in Portland, OR for four years before returning to Korea. Her stage name is the English name she used when studying abroad. She chose to keep it as there are many Nayeons and Naeuns in Kpop and thought it would be less confusing. She has been practicing ballet since she was 7 years old. She is known as the most innocent and childlike of the members of the team, but is also a very hard worker and was seen putting in extra practice time to catch up after joining the group late. Due to her thicker tone and English proficiency she is often given contrasting rap parts to Yena. She used her ballet skills to win April's first gold medal at the ISAC competition for Rhythm Gymnastics. In addition to English and Korean she can speak some German and is learning Japanese. Her favorite foods are eggs, spring rolls, and red bean porridge.
Facts: She moved around a lot growing up, born in Andong and living in Taebaek and Yongin before moving to Seoul. Her parents initially opposed her becoming a singer but she attended a singing school secretly and when she invited them to a performance they relented and supported her dream. She competed on Girl Spirit though was placed in the same group as Kim Bohyung, Uji, and Sojung and thus didn't make the finals, however it was seen as a good showcase for the new group. Though she is the youngest she's the tallest member of the group. She is also known for having a very slim physique. She was a fixture on the show Tok Tok Boni Hani. She has acted in the drama "Met You Again". She has recorded several OST tracks including Perfect (audio), This Love (audio), I Was Wrong (MV), and Like This (MV). Her parents run a restaurant specializing in fried pork. She has been learning how to box. She's a fan of Pentatonix, Billy Eilish, and DJ Khaled. Her favorite foods are sweet and sour pork, dumplings, and chocolate. She is said to resemble Nagyung from Fromis_9.
Debut: August 23rd, 2015 with Dream Candy (MV) Live Stage (Link) Choreography Video (Link)
Song: Described as a 'House style dance track with fantasy elements' this ultra-cute and innocent (seriously, there's a frickin' unicorn) song was the lead single for the group's first EP "Dreaming". Come for Somin in a dirndl, stay for the charming and delightful song that sounds a bit Christmassy.
First Comeback: November 24th, 2015 with Muah (MV) Live Stage (Link) Dance Practice (Link)
Song: The group's first comeback, and first song following the departure of Somin who decided April's concept wasn't for her, this was the promoted song from the group's first single album "Boing Boing". Another ultra-cute song, this one sees the girls dreaming of their first kiss and flirting with a mysterious Caucasian model who stumbled into their Catholic High School/Girl Scout Camp/'50s Diner. It's listed as a 'pop dance song full of exciting beats, a splendid melody, and freshness'.
Third Comeback: April 26th, 2016 with Tinkerbell (MV) Live Stage (Link) Dance Practice (Link)
Song: The lead single from the group's 2nd EP "Spring" the song is about "finding pretty love and becoming your own protagonist in a fairytale when you are tired of reality". It continues with the groups fairy-tale cute concept, and a lush instrumental backing with copious strings and synths sets the mood.
Fourth Comeback: January 3rd, 2017 with April Story (MV) Live Stage (Link) Choreography Video (Link)
Song: The title track of the group's third EP "Prelude" this sees the departure of Hyunjoo who left the group, but remained with DSP Media, to become an actress, and the addition of new members Chaekyung and Rachel. The song is a love song about unrequited love. This also sees the sound and image of the group transition a bit, still maintaining that magical fairlytale aura, but trading some of the playful cuteness for a GFriend-esque power-innocent concept which is also reflected in a more intense synchronized choreography. New member Rachel's ballet abilities are also highlighted.
Composers/Producers:e.one (see above)
Fifth Comeback: May 29th, 2017 with Mayday (MV) Live Stage (Link) Choreography Video (Link)
Song: The first promoted track from the group's 2nd single album "Mayday" this is described as an "Uptempo Arcade Pop Dance" song, and uses the metaphor of calling for a mayday to describe the excitement and butterflies felt when first falling in love. Some fun retro outfits are featured in the MV.
Fifth Comeback Pt 2: May 29th, 2017 with Lovesick (MV) Live Stage (Link)
Song: The second promoted track from their second single album "Mayday". This was originally released as part of the group's reality TV show on NaverTV "A-If-Ril" but due to the popularity of it received an MV and promotional release as well. The song is about unrequited love and features a swingy pop style.
Composers/Producers:e.one (see above)
Sixth Comeback: September 20th, 2017 with Take My Hand (MV) Live Stage (Link) Choreography Video (Link)
Song: The lead single from April's fourth EP "Eternity" this mid-tempo dance song is about metaphorical expressions of love and features an MV that trends the group's fairytale themes over towards magical realism as they turn back time to give themselves another shot at impressing a guy they fancy. Musically this hits me as a blend of GFriend and Lovelyz, and is the most mature sound from the group yet, with some very cool things going on in the chorus that I'd love u/givethatpitchvibrato to comment on if they'd like. Jinsol is also somehow a doppleganger for 2020 Park Gyuri three years ahead of time.
Seventh Comeback: March 12th, 2018 with The Blue Bird (MV) Live Stage (Link) Choreography Video (Link)
Song: The lead single from the group's fifth EP "The Blue" this song is inspired by the fairy tale The Blue Bird) and expresses that "love and happiness can always be found". Musically the lush strings and synth arrangements from e.one (and their individual composers) continue to provide the elegant aural landscape that allows April's magical concepts to flourish.
Composers/Producers:Jeong Ho Hyun (e.one) (see above)
Eighth Comeback: October 16th, 2018 with Oh My Mistake (MV) Live Stage (Link) Choreography Video (Link)
Song: The lead single from the group's sixth EP "The Ruby" this marks the biggest departure from the sound the group had gradually been evolving since their debut and became their biggest commercial success to date along with becoming a fan favorite. Taking on a retro-'80s synthwave style the song is also a departure thematically in which the lyrics speak of confidence and control in seeking love with it being described by the producers as exhibiting "healthy narcicism" (and tellingly the Korean title of the song translates to "A Sin to be Pretty"). Bonus points for integrating a rap break without a slowdown in the tempo.
Ninth Comeback: April 22nd, 2020 with Lalalilala (MV) Live Stage (Link) Dance Practice (Link)
Song: The lead single from the group's seventh EP "De Capo" this marks another departure in sound, and is described as a restart for the group which falls in line with the album title, Italian for "From the top". Taking the groups magical themes into a darker sci-fi realm mixed with cosmic influences that's reminiscent visually and musically of some of WJSN's recent work this is another step into a more mature presentation and sound for the group. According to the producers they worked to make sure each member received a 'killing part' and the strong chorus has been likened to KARA's output.
Tenth (and most recent) Comeback: July 29th, 2020 with Now or Never (MV) Live Stage (Link) Dance Practice (Link)
Song: The promoted track from the group's first summer special single album "Hello Summer". It's described as 'Hybrid Pop' blending guitar and and a fun bouncy synth-brass line into an upbeat and addictive summer song which combine with bright and playful visuals to create a new look and sound for April.
Trivia: On debut April was one of the youngest active Kpop groups, with an average age of 17.5. The group has a mascot, known as Sawori, which is a giant seed representing sprouting love and energy for the group. The group has amassed a number of CF deals including Mexican Chicken (a Korean chicken chain), FIFA Online, and a goat-milk face mask product. Their fandom name was the result of a fan vote and Fineapple narrowly beat out Aries as the top choice. Despite a long hiatus between The Ruby and De Capo the group seems to be gaining momentum, with their special summer album Hello Summer reaching 14,000 physical copies sold, the group's best thus far, while the group had never broken 10K before De Capo. Lalalilala also marked the group's highest single charting at 40 on the Gaon digital chart and 37 on Melon. As a fun little Easter-Egg the first letter of April's first three EPs (Dreaming, Spring, Prelude) spells out "DSP". The group has won three medals at ISAC competitions, all of them for Rhythm Gymnastics. The group is currently one of the longest-running active idol groups that has never won 1st place on a music show. ________________________________________________________ SOLOIST OF THE WEEK Woosung/Sammy Who is he?: Woosung is the lead vocalist, guitarist, and leader of the band The Rose. He has released several solo songs and a solo EP but is also still active with his band. Company: J&Star Entertainment appears to be a new and small company with The Rose being their only musical act, though they also represent a male model and actor by the name of Bonyoung. Real Name: Kim Woo Sung (Korean) Sammy Kim (English) Age: 27 (IA) Pre-Release Debut: July 19th, 2019 with Lonely (audio) Live Performance (Link)
Song: A soulful R&B ballad with simple piano accompaniment which is described by Woosung as a healing song. This was released as a pre-release single ahead of his first album.
Composers/Producers:Woosung (original artist)
Official Solo Debut: July 25th, 2019 with Face (MV) Live Performance (Link)
Song: The promoted single from his debut EP "Wolf". Woosung stated that men are often compared to wolves in terms of being instinctual and aggressive, but he wanted to show the inner side of the wolf, the side that yearns to run with a pack to assuage loneliness and which mates for life. This particular song is about looking beyond first impressions and how everyone has loveliness regardless if they meet traditional beauty standards or not. Musically with a funk-infused pop sound that blends the elements of his music from his band with a more mainstream electronic pop genre it's unique and enjoyable.
Composers/Producers:Woosung (original artist)
First Comeback: November 15th, 2019 with Beautiful Girl feat. Penile (MV) Live Performance (Link)
Song: Released as a single album, this is a song Woosung wrote 5 years prior to release and decided to polish for actual release. It's described as a cute love-song about expressing feelings to a girl you like. Musically this laid-back midtempo R&B jam is the perfect kind of song to lean back and relax to, the odd rap about ham nonwithstanding.
YouTube Channel: via The Rose Trivia: He is from Los Angeles, CA. He competed on the first season of Kpop Star. He participated in the writing and production of the song Yolo from Boys24 (link). His role model for The Rose is The Beatles, a band that showed both vocal talent as well as creativity. During the album cover shooting for his Wolf EP they used a real wolf-dog for the photos, and he says it was difficult because the wolf-dog did not listen to commands and kept wanting to wander away. He is close to BM of KARD and Ashley of Ladies Code due to their US upbringing. When he was young he watched a video of Angus Young of AC/DC and loved the look of the guitar so made one himself out of shoelaces and a toy sword he had. His mother ended up buying him a guitar after that, though it wasn't until he was injured while playing football in high school that he decided to devote his energies fully into music. ________________________________________________________ IN MEMORIAM VERMUDA Who were they?: A five member boy group under Pacemaker Entertainment. Their name in Hangul is spelled the same way as the island of Bermuda. Their fandom name was Triangle, the same as the title of their debut EP. Debut: June 12th, 2017 with Dream Girl (MV) Live Stage (Link) Dance Practice (Link)
Song: Described as "Ratchet" and "Hip House" in style, the goal was to release a debut track that was different than other idol music. A fun bass beat and multiple tempo and texture changes throughout the song do keep things interesting.
Active Between: June 2017 - Sometime in 2019 Reasons for Disbanding: All of the groups social media accounts were deleted or went silent, which combined with no output since 2018 leads to the likelihood that the group has quietly disbanded. No other groups or information can be found for the group's company Pacemaker Entertainment, so it's possible the company folded as well. Trivia: The group featured former members of 100%, ZPZG (which is rumored to be reforming), and Mr. Slam. Member NaKang who contributed to the writing of their final track is a cousin of KiKwang from Highlight. The group had previously been known as BEAM. It appears that they attempted to do live touring internationally including in China and Japan during 2018. ________________________________________________________ That's it for today, let's get the discussion on! As always, if you have any suggestions for groups, content, or things you'd like to see, please let me know in the comments below. Also as always, a big shout-out to u/not-named-in-credits for founding nugutown and u/sharnaranwan for continuing the work over there.
2020.10.11 05:24 Vegan-DaddioWhat's the best recipe to make to impress a date?
I've been vegan for 2 years but I've only made a few meals for different women ive gone on dates with. My go-to is a mean Thai Green curry that I make and its worked out well, but I need other dishes since I can't make it everytime I have someone over for dinner. As a single guy my personal meals are just fine and I like them, but Idk if they'd translate as "impressive" or good to other people. They're very simple and quick to make. So I'd like to hear yall's best recipes to impress someone 😁
2020.10.10 12:39 MeloxianBJJ got me sent to prison...
I’m in a dream I was a kid again back in the house I grew up in when I was younger (I aged throughout the dream from like 10 to looking like I do now) and my childhood stepdad invited a girl I had a crush on a few years back (around 18 or 19 ish) over for some kind of date thing which I didn’t like. My mom spent the whole time cleaning and I was on my phone, and the two of them walked around and talked. I tried to mind my buisness, but after she left I went to the bathroom and he followed me in and said I had a bad attitude for not supporting him which pissed me off even more. The straw that broke the camels back was when he said If I thought I was big enough to fight him he’d beat the fuck out of me and kick me out. He was like a foot or two bigger than me (the same difference he was when I was a child) I got into a staring match with him and when he put a hand on my right shoulder I broke the grip and got low for a single leg takedown but changed my mind due to the height and decided to strike. I hit him with a few Thai kicks which were fast and accurate with good turning in the dream that should’ve knocked him to his knees due to the turn I had but weren’t effective because of Dream magic. Now at this point he’s punching me and I’m defending his wild punches with a high boxing guard but I’m not liking the situation - he’s towering over me throwing wild haymakers so I say fuck it let’s go to the ground. I duck and weave my way into position and hit a fast/hard as fuck ippon seio nage (single shoulder throw) which put him on the ground (there was magically enough space because of dream logic). He wasn’t doing a lot of defending from side control so I passed to mount and punched the fuck out of him until his face resembled a tomato. I remembered I’d practiced guillotines in class and he wasn’t defending so I got both hooks in and took his back very slopily but it worked. I hit him with a rear naked choke until he passed out and I held on for a little longer then let go. He was still alive but when I got up I kicked him in the head and spit on him. The cops were called and they came in and arrested me and I woke up just as I got to prison.
2020.10.10 07:28 jensyaoThe Splintering of Mainstream and Purist Hip Hop in 1996, where Nas Explored Both Avenues and Ended Up Settling More Towards the Purist Spectrum
this is vaguely researched from how it was sparsely told to me and if anyone can factcheck or cosign, that would be great...or you can hit up Karceno or any hip hop anthologist for the full story So, commercial rap has existed before Nas with the likes of MC Hammer and such, but Biggie with his 1994 "Ready to Die" album basically told the world that he could make a hardcore album with radio-friendly, female-friendly singles. Biggie got his advice from 2Pac "to rap for the [females] and the [males] would follow and pay money for what the [females] like", where 2Pac said Biggie changed his whole style from "Party and Bullshit" to "Big Poppa" aided by Puff Daddy with R&B production and features in the form of one-off promotional remixed singles and exemplified further on "Life After Death" in 1997. https://i.pinimg.com/originals/e6/57/00/e6570013fc636b753e5b21d50a49e70c.jpg https://christopherpierznik.files.wordpress.com/2015/10/nas-and-biggie-at-the-hit-factory-studios-nyc-1995-by-delphine-fawundu-e1426014158666.jpg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uh7bS0ddE4o https://www.instagram.com/tv/CEUUuxDlI8G/ Nas interview for Gimme the Loot (remix) Nas and Biggie was in friendly competition with each other and Nas was supposed to be on the Gimme The Loot (remix). The original one was just Biggie with himself pitched higher but the remix was supposed to have Nas on it. These pictures were supposedly taken for that writing session, but Nas was so dumbfounded that Biggie could make up songs on the spot without writing anything down that he just went home and said he got too high from the chocolate thai and didn't come back to the studio the next day. This is confirmed by one of Nas' interviews with Breakfast Club in 2020. https://youtu.be/Ka--C2cDaXY?t=214 https://youtu.be/gEJWje0i51o?t=90 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hzZec7jwjo Every verse that Biggie recorded is probably already put out officially P Diddy, with the exception of a few censored lines from "Dead Wrong", even his 3rd verse, which was replaced by an Eminem feature ended up being leaked. The verse from "Gimme the Loot (remix)" became "Young G's" after he died and later "Breaking Old Habits" with contemporary beats, features, and producers. Biggie went platinum with "Ready To Die" and Illmatic went gold at the time, but Illmatic eventually went platinum a decade later. The reason they kept releasing Illmatic anniversary albums is not only because it was a classic but also because Nas had a really good deal when he first signed with Columbia and that he earns more from Illmatic sales than from other albums he later released. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=phaJXp_zMYM https://www.whosampled.com/sample/1066/N.W.A-Dopeman-Ohio-Players-Funky-Worm/ The problem was, even though Nas earns more per sale off Illmatic, he made the album for the block and not really thinking globally or even bi-coastally for the US as Nas said on "Big Things". If you noticed, the beginning of Big Poppa's beat was overlaid with a glossed-over west coast synth that you predominately find on Dr. Dre's production sampling heavily from The Funky Worm. https://www.whosampled.com/sample/462/Nas-Lauryn-Hill-If-I-Ruled-the-World-(Imagine-That)-Whodini-Friends/ https://www.whosampled.com/sample/463/Nas-Lauryn-Hill-If-I-Ruled-the-World-(Imagine-That)-Kurtis-Blow-If-I-Ruled-the-World/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/It_Was_Written https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stakes_Is_High https://www.vibe.com/2014/04/nas-biggie-said-you-finally-got-monkey-your-back-when-it-was-written-went-platinum So in 1996, when Nas dropped his sophomore album, he had more producers that catered to the mainstream. Hip hop's golden child, Nas, basically "switched sides" went from hip hop purity with heavy New York style beats on Illmatic into radio mainstream beats with The Trackmasters' and Dr Dre's production, even though "If I Ruled The World" sampled Kurtis Blow and Whodini. You can find harder beats on the album cuts on "It Was Written", but Nas followed Biggie's template of having radio singles to propel radio awareness and sales. Similar to 2Pac's advice to Biggie, which was then relayed to Nas and Jay-Z, you can either be the broke rapper rhyming over people's heads or the rich rapper rhyming to be understood while dropping jewels in popular music. De La Soul's "Stakes is High" and "It Was Written" was both released on July 2, 1996 and it was not a matter of if people had money to buy both albums, because Master P back in the late 90s dropped albums every week, but it was a matter of the conscious consumer choosing sides between hip hop purity beats or glossed over mainstream beats. Regardless of the beat production, Nas was challenging the rap listener by asking "why not have both?" by showcasing that he could rhyme on hard New York beats with "Shootouts" and "I gave you power" as well as the Dr. Dre's and Trackmasters' production that he was not abandoning either fanbases. That is why when people listen to "It Was Written" in hindsight, it sounds splintered where Nas had efforts in terms of making Illmatic 2 but he also had the mainstream allure to cater to both fanbases at the time. When Nas went platinum with "It Was Written," Biggie told Nas he finally got that monkey off his back, but after that, Nas was challenged to drop a double album after 2Pac and Biggie did it (do you have enough content as an artist to drop a double album and not have it flop?), where I Am was supposed to be a double album if it wasn't for the leaks. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xycXyyA8-K4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aSGSaVxqUGQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Al4IBwobMi8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nb1Jsay0Q1Q https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-q9fnij9aM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m41dqI5SS1E https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EIwnNe3RPQA Nas and De La Soul did freestyles together on their promo run but they never made songs together until recently and even then, Nas was only featured on the chorus and did not lay down a verse. De La Soul along with Fugees was basically attacking mainstream and gangsta rap, respectively, at the time by making fun of/spoofing 2Pac's "I get around" video with their Ego Tripping Part 2 video and with Lauryn Hill rapping "So while you're imitating Al Capone, I'll be Nina Simone" on "Ready or Not". HiphopDX did a good job covering this portion with their video commentary. This is also why 2Pac dissed the Fugees and De La Soul with his "when we ride on our enemies" and "watch ya mouth (unreleased)" songs that was supposed to be on the don killuminati album. 2Pac was sour with Dr Dre leaving deathrow at the time and proceeded to work with Nas on "it was written" but Nas squashed the beef with 2Pac. 2Pac was supposed to take his Nas mentions off his Makaveli album but he died. 2Pac told Nas to meet him at Vegas and Nas went, but 2Pac died one day before Nas' brithday. Nas stopped his concert for Ed Lover to announce that 2Pac died. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hip_Hop_Is_Dead https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_La_Soul_Is_Dead https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hip_Hop_Is_Dead_(song) Nas, when interviewed for his Hip Hop is Dead album, said that hip hop died multiple times from the golden age to the mainstream and that Nas himself contributed to the death of Hip Hop. Common said he used to love HER (Hip Hop) but Nas straight up said it died, which offended the south. Nas said that he got his title from De La Soul's album "De La Soul is Dead" and that Nas found it ill to say that your own group died and then rap about the eulogy about how things could have went differently to change the outcome of the ultimate demise, and that was the ideology behind naming his album "Hip Hop Is Dead", by showing young cats how hip hop and rhyming is supposed to be done before the game was commercialized with the 3rd verse of the title track. https://archive.org/details/Nasir_Jones_-_Living_Legends_Chapter_1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VglkQkWpuis https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k97WxRtd_cE https://genius.com/14789473 https://genius.com/10586 https://genius.com/10165046 Nas basically went full circle. He explored mainstream rap starting with It Was Written to Nastradamus and trying to go platinum with the flashy beats and hooks but he said that he is over it by settling with his own lane of picking "hip hop purist beats" and shaking off his 'bandwagon listeners' with his Streets Disciple album. Stillmatic was rated 69 on metacritic because Nas attracted too many non-rap listeners to critique his album, even though from a purist point of view, that album deserved 5 mics in the source. Nas even released a mixtape in 2005 with his verses overlaying hot beats at the time to prove a point that his lyrics sound hot with contemporary beats but he chose beats because they are supposed to be challenging and not as easy to rap on to make a point that he is a lyricist who can rhyme on any beat that inspires him. If you want to listen Nas on flashy beats, go back to his 1996 to 1999 era and his braveheart features that had swizz and lil jon production. Like he said on Simple Things, Nas can go platinum despite his beats and people listen for his message; other people go platinum because they are carried by the catchy hook or beat. Nas raps about potent, important issues that are relevant to his age demographic while other rappers are barely relevant because they run out of rhyming words or topics to rap about, use their popularity, merchandising, or TV cameos as a crutch, become a caricature of themselves to the point of embarrassment for the sake of chasing a check or a hit record, still boast or exaggerate things they did 10-20 years ago, ride the wave of other artists coming up but masquerading as a co-sign, start beef, clown people, and talk crazy on social media instead of genuinely be interested in making music, or namedrop for the sake of relevancy. Nas did none or barely any of that extra stuff...he signed himself on Mass Appeal, made quiet investments, and made a QB album trying to put other rappers on from his neighborhood -- what other rapper did that? He stays quiet, meticulous, and focused within his own lane. When Jay-Z finally rapped his age bracket on 4:44 in 2017, people lauded Jay for telling people to invest in land and assets that rise in value over time, but Nas has been telling you that you should invest in stocks on Illmatic and buy land and self-own businesses on "Nas Album Done" in 2016, lmao. Nas expanded your thinking on King's Disease by telling people to stop playing the victim card and reconsider the food, thoughts, and knowledge that you are putting into your system. Those who are woke to Nas knows this and people who still mainly listen to commercialized rap are slowing waking up to sleeping on Nas after all these years and some are still in denial. Nas' thoughts and motivations are best summarized below from "Why you hate the game" for what type of potent, informed issues he addresses and tries to resolve on every album and he does not double-back to make the same album twice because he is not trying to chase a hit or hop on trends for sheep to lead the shepherd...that is why his albums sometimes feel they come from left field because he is a trendsetter for other people to follow what he is doing and not the other way around: I can show 'em the water but can't make 'em drink it And I can show them my fortunes but can't force 'em think rich And still I don't abort 'em when and if they sink quick Ignore the ignorance, I rep the brilliance of Queensbridge ...Add your 2 cents below, thanks
